The Stack? Yes, 730 Hillsdale on Bayview is now The Stack

The Brown Group residential and commercial mid-rise on Bayview Ave has been branded as The Stack. The news comes in an article in Urban Toronto without an explanation of just what the name might mean. The development took on the name 730 Hillsdale last summer but that may have been too much like a street address. Anyway, good luck to The Stack. Is that like in “Stack ’em up boys” and other stack sayings? You know, blowing one’s stack, does that stack up and so on.

Sinkhole at Hillsdale and Bayview

A large sinkhole has opened up at the intersection of Bayview and Hillsdale Ave. City and Enbridge people were digging things up and  mulling over just what was causing the collapse. In this picture, taken from the sidewalk just outside the Bank of Montreal, it appears that there has been a previous attempt to fill a depression in the road.  There is no access to Bayview from Hillsdale.

Comings and goings observed on South Bayview in May

A stroll down our favourite street has revealed changes to some well known businesses. Peering through the glass, we could see the demolition of the interior space that was formerly home to Scholar’s Choice and Butter Studio. The refurbished space will make way for a “new restaurant” with a patio, according to a building permit application. Strolling south, we observed a new banner that is covering up the sign for the Bombay Snack Bar. They are now known as Charcoal Biryani at 1595 Bayview Ave. Parpar clothing is still preparing their store, with plans to open in the former location of Express Travel at 1569 Bayview Ave. Since patio season has officially begun, tables, chairs, potted plants and smiling faces are starting to fill our sidewalks. We think the electric blue patio set at La Diperie is rather eye-catching! This will be their first summer at 1559 Bayview Ave. Welcome to Bayview, Supermart and Petals (1635 Bayview Ave.) your beautiful flowers are a feast for the eyes!

Justin remembers Mel and other South Bayview notabilities

East York loyalist Justin Van Dette has tweeted a touching reminiscence of the late Mel Lastman. It shows a very young Van Dette (upper left) with Mr. Lastman at a campaign event for former City Councillor and Lastman ally Case Ootes. At the upper right, we see the smiling faces of the Leaside Volleyball U18 Heat team as they celebrate grabbing bronze in their category at the Provincial Cup held at Markham Sportsdome. Nice going ladies. Below that, a reminder that tenants start moving into The Stack at Bayview and Hillsdale Aves in 2022. No word on stores names yet. Lower left is a thank you from Toronto Hydro for consumer patience and employee long hours during the recent wind blackouts. And finally at the bottom right is the Leaside High School Sewing Club. Love you sewing people one and all.

The construction hoarding surrounding The Brown Group’s new mid-rise development has been removed, revealing the commercial space on the main floor of the luxury, residential rental building.
