Ryan Spitzer collects, delivers gym shoes to Thorncliffe PS

Ryan Spitzer of Hanna Rd. has collected and delivered, with the help of the community, 125 pairs of donated washed and cleaned gym shoes to Thorncliffe Park Public School this week. The shoe drive is in its 6th year and helps ensure kids from kindergarten through grade five are ready to play. His task required ingenuity during the C-19 pandemic because schools were not available to collect and hold shoes. Instead, public-spirited people were asked to deliver the shoes to the Spitz front porch.

Thorncliffe running shoe drive produces bumper collection

The 2021 Thorncliffe Park PS running shoe collection conducted in recent years by a young man from Leaside has once again produced a bumper collection of shoes. Ryan Spitzer has posted a picture of some 171 pairs of shoes donated by area residents. They will be donated to kids in need of footwear for athletic and recreational activities. Well done Ryan. The running shoe collection was begun in 2014 by then-student Mackenzie Bier of Leaside.

Time-honoured Thorncliffe Running Shoe Drive needs help

A time-honoured and vital community act of kindness needs special help this year because schools are closed. It’s the Thorncliffe Running Shoe Drive. Every year this excellent project delivers hundreds of smaller sized shoes to kids in Thorncliffe Park so they can participate in the gym. Traditionally, the schools were the best place to send a message by word of mouth and collect donations. But this year the volunteer man-in-charge, Ryan Spitzer, is asking friends to make shoe drop-offs to the porch at 59 Hanna Road. See his FB post here. FB

Program started in 2014

The program was started in 2014 by Grade 9 Leaside student Mackenzie Bier after she learned that students at Thorncliffe Park Public School could not participate in gym class because their families could not afford the proper footwear. As seen in the 2018 picture below, Mackenzie was honoured for her selfless work.
