Only in the mideast is a ceasefire a “surrender”

The armed wing of Hamas has rejected an Egyptian proposal of a 12-hour ceasefire in the fighting between Hamas and Israel. It called the initiative a “surrender”. Israel had previously accepted the ceasefire proposal but now says it resuming operations, whatever that may mean. Only in the middle east

Rolph Road Elementary School marks 75 years

Petra Grantham has written to ask the many alumnus of Rolph Road Elementary School (and their families) to start digging for pictures and other memories of days spent at this great old institution. It is 75 this year. The occasion will take place over two days: Friday, October 24th will see a social event at the William Lea Room at Leaside Arena and Saturday, October 25th is the big Open House at the school. You can  register on Facebook or at the Website.  The organizers are looking for all sorts of things. Stories, photos, memorabilia, documents, books, correspondence and newspaper clippings. Can you tell them something about the school’s history? Do you recall any happy/fun/sad/scary events? Do you have a memory you would like to share? Do you have contact information for former classmates and teachers/principals? Can you help the school identify other students and staff from your era? Do you know of any notable/famous students? All memorabilia used will be returned. Please give Petra a hand and mail her at this address. rolphroad75@gmail.com

Tokyo Sushi set to re-open on August 1

Tokyo Sushi is set to re-open on August 1, 2014. After a fire that closed their business back in January, the restoration work is almost complete.

Man sure can live by bread alone at COBS

Forgive us for paraphrasing St. Matthew but these days people do lots worse. It’s just that the idea of living with all that delicious COBs bread is enough to make a millionaire apply for the job that is being advertised on Twitter. Let us know if you land it.  South Bayview Bulldog

Libs say budget is the answer to any problem

Two months of bad news about lost jobs in Ontario is evidence that this province needs the Liberals’ new budget more than ever, Premier Kathleen Wynne said Monday. Oddly, good news about new jobs used to be an argument for the same thing. If Ontario adds jobs, it means the government’s policies are working. If Ontario loses jobs, it means the government’s policies aren’t being applied hard enough yet. David Reevely, Ottawa Citizen

New tree-top fir poles get high-voltage wires

All across South Bayview, Hydro One is replacing rotten concrete and wood poles with new, tree-top height fir utility poles. These are the backbone of neighborhood grids to the delivery our electricity. This three-bucket crew was at work today on Belsize Drive. The work goes on all over the area however. Traffic is also congested at St. Clair Ave. E and Welland Ave as old wooden poles are replaced.

What? Archie Andrews shot defending gay friend

Archie Andrews, that incredibly adolescent love-sick dope who’s been mooning over Veronica for 73 years, is about to get shot. Really? Yes. It’s all part of what the new owners of the Archie Comics franchise call doing something “impactful” that will resonate with the world and bring home just how important Archie is to everyone.  Well okay, but what does Archie do for an encore? The Archie Comics publisher Jon Goldwater doesn’t say. It is a demise that fits the 21st Century world well. Archie  will be gunned down July 16, 2014, protecting his gay friend Kevin Keller.  Keller’s character first joined Veronica Lodge, Betty Cooper, Jughead Jones and Reggie Mantle in the Archie Comics spin-off  “Veronica” in 2010. Archie Andrews was created in 1941 by Bob Montana along with his original characters of Jughead, Betty and Veronica. Archie went on to launch a thousand comic book and other stories. Montana was 21 when he created Archie based on his own experience as a high school kid. An editor helped him write good copy for his characters and Montana drew the Archie comic strip for the next 35 years. He saw it published in more than 750 newspapers. Here’s hoping that Archie somehow or other comes back to life. Images: Archie’s demise and (below) Archie as we knew him.

Midnight crime nets cells, headphone and cash

Police report that a 23 year old man was approached by three others at Bay St. and Davenport Rd. after midnight Friday. Two of the suspects punched the victim and demanded his backpack and mobile telephone. He complied. The victim sustained minor injuries. And three youths 16, 17 and 18 were robbed Saturday morning at Yonge Street and Isabella Street. They were approached by a man wearing a disguise. He produced a handgun and forced the victims into an underground parking lot. He took a headphone, a quantity of cellular phones and cash from the victims.

“None of the above” was not worth the effort

As might be expected, that electoral flavour-of-the-day called “none of the above” was the choice of a larger number of voters in the June election than ever before. Those who refused their ballots numbered 31,399. Well la-dee-dah. Hope all you voters who posed in front of the scrutineers giving them back your ballot are well-satisfied with that zero-grade accomplishment. Your charade was among the most idle and self-involved acts of citizenry to be imagined. We’re told that something called Democracy Watch threatened to take action against Elections Ontario to make it publicize the option. Fine. But it’s Democracy Watch that should be challenged for its foolishness. It panders to the most simple minded do-nothing tendency on the part of voters to tell them not voting will change things.

Ontario budget to be presented Monday

We won, we want to and we will damn well do it. The Ontario budget that shocked many fiscal conservatives and sparked the last election will come back with a vengeance tomorrow (Monday, July 14, 2014). As writer Maria Babbage notes, the finance minister Mr. Sousa is gung ho. The government will “implement things and expedite  them more quickly” than it had previously intended because of its majority election victory he says.  Canadian Press
