A Lawrence Park home on Daneswood Road was broken into March 15, 2014 between the hours of 6.24 p.m. and 8.28 p.m. Those precise times suggest an alarm system recorded comings and goings. Let’s hope there’s a video capture. Removed was a quantity of jewellery and watches. Also in 53 Division, a resident of Hillhurst Boulevard reports that between March 7, 2014 at 1 p.m. and March 14, 2014 at 6 p.m. entry was gained to the premises by forcing a window. Removed was a quantity of computer equipment and watches.

The company will move to a smaller storefront at 369 Eglinton West. The Tea Emporium is a retailer and wholesaler of tea. It’s Eglinton location has also operated as a tea shop for about a decade. The company had a location on Bayview Ave. where Tori and Cates Cupcakes now operate. So China abstained on the UN vote to condemn the Russian referendum in Crimea. It declares its support of Ukraine territorial integrity. What a surprise. In fact, the Beijing politburo doesn’t give a fig about Ukraine. It does care (obsessively) about anything that permits parts of countries to secede. Canada never has to worry about China having a democratically-elected Quebec separatist for tea in the Middle Kingdom. No, no. You only have to mention possible separation of (insert a name) to give the un-elected big boys in China a terrible rash.
Poll reveals Chow’s “commiseration support”
by •
A poll by Forum Research gives Olivia Chow the support of 36 per cent of respondents. Rob Ford has 28 per cent and John Tory 22 per cent. Karen Stintz is said to have received 5 per cent and David Soknacki 2 per cent. Seven per cent were undecided. The poll was conducted Thursday and seems to have been skewed somewhat by Ms. Chow’s adoring kick-off meeting at St. Simon’s Anglican Church the day before. Early indications bear out the perception of many people that Ms Chow is an enormously sympathetic figure. Her poor immigrant origins and status as Jack Layton’s widow are compelling. For those who would not vote for Ms. Chow the mayoral campaign so far has been a bit like watching a traffic collision unfold in slow motion. They see Ms Chow winning the election with a run down the middle between Mr. Ford and Mr. Tory. Karen Stintz’s single digit result also squares with this armchair strategist’s analysis. Stintz is a smart, attractive and thoroughly likable person. But she has limited name-recognition and little charisma. It is a long campaign and sympathies will change. But Ms. Chow is playing with factors that can persuade women to vote for her. One woman who is not so persuaded is columnist Christie Blatchford. She feels that Chow has “nothing to say.” As stated here on Wednesday, Ms Chow frequently seems vague. Will Toronto electors cast their ballots merely to commiserate with Ms. Chow? Nail Studio moves one door north to 1695 Bayview

The Nail Studio at 1693 Bayview Ave. will shortly be moving one door north to 1695, the premises formerly occupied by the store known as Marmalade Skies. The Nail Studio is run by Kim and the small business is pretty busy. It was standing room only today (Saturday, March 15, 214). Right next door to the north, at 1699, is Alex and Bev Simmons shop, Dolly Jewellers.
Ward 26: Scribblers want an election every day
by •
If journalists had their way there would an election every day. That must be why next October’s municipal voting is serving as a handy substitute for the scribbling omnivores of political junk here at The South Bayview Bulldog and elsewhere. Well okay, it’s not all junk. This site on Wikipedia is a handy reference of who has filed and who hasn’t. It appears to be a day or two slow because in Ward 26 it shows no one running. We know in fact that John Parker (inset top) the incumbent, has said he will file some time in the Spring. And a frequent if not exactly perennial candidate, David Sparrow (inset centre) has filed his papers in Ward 26 two days ago. This might be an interesting contest if popular businessman Jon Burnside (inset lower) takes another run at the ward. Burnside came within a mere 425 votes of Parker in 2010. Most remarkably, that race also saw a very strong third place candidate, Mohamed Dhanani. He finished just 161 votes behind Mr. Burnside. Some tight race. Mr Dhanani has since moved on to take an executive position with the Aga Khan Foundation in Canada and will not be running. But back to who has filed. The Wiki site shows that Jaye Robinson (Ward 25) has yet to officially declare although there is no doubt this able councillor will run. Josh Matlow has declared in Ward 22 and so far he is the sole candidate. Mr. Matlow’s tireless and rather touchy-feely approach to ward issues should serve him well. In Ward 27, Kristyn Tam-Wong has filed as have two other candidates. As locals know, Ward 27 usually produces a field that seldom numbers less than a dozen. As we recall, there were 15 in 2010. Malaysia co-pilot was “religious” says his family
by •
Reuters continues to lead the reporting out of Kuala Lumpur on the many aspects of the missing Malaysian jetliner story. Writer Niluksi Koswanage files information that the 27-year-old co-pilot of the Boeing 777 had been known to invite women into the cockpit during flights. One such visitor, Jonti Roos, said she visited with the crew while en route. They smoked and chatted but nothing wrong occurred, she said. Friends and family of the co-pilot, Fariq Addul Hamid, say he was religious and serious about his career. This comes as The New York Times publishes information that says the jet made strange manoeuvres after it reversed direction Saturday. It is said to have climbed to 45,000 feet, above it’s recommended altitude. It then descended to below radar levels, the story says. None of this seems to shed any light on where the plane went. It does suggest to some however that there was either a struggle to control the plane or that perhaps someone who was not fully trained to handle the jet was at the controls.

Parker meeting on Eg LRT this Tuesday, March 18
by •
Road narrowing and diversions are underway on Eglinton Ave. E. on either side of Brentcliffe Rd. as the multi-year job of building the Crosstown LRT begins in Leaside and beyond. As reported, boring machines will shortly begin working their way westward from Brentcliffe on the two tunnels of the underground transit line. Work is expected to take until at least 2020 although it isn’t clear just how long this intersection will be effected. The LRT stations to be built at Bayview Ave. and at Laird Drive will be built by so-called cut and cover. What that means is that both intersections will look a lot like big ditches for as much as two years. It’s going to be fun. John Parker (Ward 26) has scheduled an information meeting for the evening of next Tuesday, March 18, 2014. It will be held in the William Lea Room in Leaside Gardens beginning at 7 p.m. Mr. Parker asks that residents bring their questions and concerns.
