Justin Trudeau sorry for anti-Alberta remarks

Liberal leadership contender and Montreal-area MP Justin Trudeau says he is sorry for remarks he made (above) in an interview about Alberta politicians. “I’m sorry I said what I did. I was wrong to relate the area of the country that Mr. [Stephen] Harper is from with the people who live there and with the policies that he has that don’t represent the values of most Canadians,” said Trudeau, who was speaking at the Vancouver Art Gallery, on the final stop of his British Columbia tour.  National Post

Three views of the changes at 34 Sharron Drive

The little  bungalow at 34 Sharron Drive in Leaside was badly run down and overrun by bushes and ivy last summer. But, at left, it is now an excavation for a new home which will no doubt add a lot to this quiet street between Rumsey Road and Cameron Crescent. Centre is the house a couple of years ago and at right the previously mentioned green overrun in August this year.

Hotel hit by Twitter Tide after horse refused entry

Marty the Calgary Stampeder horse is welcomed at the Royal York Hotel this afternoon after hotel management realized it was committing a huge public relations blunder by turning Marty away. Perhaps the hotel’s owners, Fairmont, being American, had no sense of the history of horses at the Royal York. It started in 1948 when Calgary first competed in the Grey Cup in Toronto. Reports say that the noisy crowd outside on Front Street demanding entry was less persuasive than the Twitter Tide that hit the hotel as news got around town. The Royal York tried to make up for its gaffe by offering Marty excellent looking crudities in a suitable bushel basket. Yes Sir.

The Toronto School board has shelved the idea of selling off excess school land to raise cash for re-investment in the system — at least for the time being. One school on the list was Bennington Heights Elementary School. CBC.ca  Bennington post

Jack Taylor’s performance left even Kobe Bryant impressed. The Division III guard shattered the NCAA scoring record with 138 points, hoisting a mind-boggling 108 attempts — or one shot every 20 seconds — in eclipsing the previous record by 25 points. Taylor made 27 of 71 3-point attempts, was 52 of 108 overall from the field and added seven free throws on 10 attempts while playing 36 minutes in Grinnell College’s 179-104 victory over Faith Baptist Bible on Tuesday night in Grinnell, Iowa. “I don’t think reality has set in yet,” said the 5-foot-10, 170-pound sophomore from Black River Falls, Wis.

A foggy good morning to all South Bayview

It’s a foggy morning across South Bayview and much of Southern Ontario today as a thick gray  blanket has formed overnight.  The picture shows Rose Park Drive in Moore Park at 7.30 a.m. Wednesday Driving will require more care.  Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement warning of the fog and predicting tbat it should clear later today but it is quite dense this morning. Porter Airlines, which flies out of Billy Bishop Airport on Toronto Island, is asking passengers to check their flight status before heading to the airport as flights may be delayed due to weather.

Bennington School land may shrink to half

The Toronto and District School Board has included a large piece of the property of Bennington Heights Elementary School in its proposal to sell school land. The plan is to put the school system on a sound financial footing. Bennington School sits at the east end of picturesque Bennington Heights Drive and consists at present of 6.37 acres. The board is proposing to sell off 3.28 acres or 51% of the present school property. Indeed, it is a large area and Bennington School sits in a park-like setting. It is a beautiful environment for children. The Bennington property is the only one of some 127 named which is in the South Bayview area.  Most lands being proposed for sale are in North York, Etobicoke and Scarborough.  It is estimated they would bring in more than $100 million to use for school renovations. All properties listed

Storefront at 1538 Bayview is sold, will be leased

1538 Bayview in 2008

It seems good news that the store at 1538 Bayview Avenue has been sold and will soon be put up for lease. In recent times this storefront was the location of the Leaside Express variety store (right) and then, in 2010, was completely renovated to house the NIMA money exchange. Sadly, fire at Leaside Cleaners right next door late the following year drove out the NIMA tenant. It has been vacant since. Perhaps now, with a new landlord, we will see a dynamic business at this address. There remains work to be done because smoke damage from the 2011 fire exists both downstairs and in the upstairs apartment.
