Students have fun with phonics at Children’s Garden School

The Children’s Garden School year is off to a great start. The JKs are already well into their phonics program, learning their letter sounds and the differences between vowels and consonants. Students add letters as they build their ‘train’, one sound at a time. Vowel ‘cars’ in the train are always coloured red to remind the children that they play a special role in every word. CGS students are working well beyond public school expectations at this grade level. Working with their teachers in small groups allows for focused instruction. Boys, often thought not to enjoy language arts at this stage, thrive in this structured atmosphere.

JK classes for the 2017/18 school year are full but there is space available for the 2018/19 school year. Registration is just around the corner on November 16. Book your tour today to see what CGS can offer your child. Is your child still not adjusting to their SK classroom? Spaces available now. New SK students will start at the beginning of the phonics program and will get the full benefit that JK students receive. Find out more at cgsschool.com or call Director of Admission, Kelly Scott at 416 423 5017 x 43.

WEATHER ALERT: Possibility of funnel clouds in TO today

3:13 PM EDT Thursday 07 September 2017
Weather advisory in effect for:
City of Toronto
Conditions will be favourable for the development of funnel clouds today.
Scattered thunderstorms across Southern Ontario will continue into this evening.
Some of the thunderstorms will bring dime sized hail, wind gusts to 70 km/h and frequent lightning.
Funnel clouds may also make a brief appearance this afternoon in this unseasonably cool and unstable air mass.
Thunderstorms are expected to dissipate later this evening.
These types of funnel clouds are generated by weak rotation under rapidly growing clouds or weak thunderstorms. This weak rotation is normally not a danger near the ground. However, there is a chance that this rotation could intensify and become a weak landspout tornado.
Treat any funnel cloud sighting seriously. Should a funnel cloud develop nearby, prepare to take shelter. These funnel clouds usually appear with little or no warning.
Please continue to monitor alerts and forecasts issued by Environment Canada. To report severe weather, send an email to ec.cpio-tempetes-ospc-storms.ec@canada.ca or tweet reports using #ONStorm.

Don’t worry, these child-sized figures are not aliens or something from another dimension. They are part of a marketing stunt for the upcoming Stephen King movie, It. Much of the movie was filmed in Toronto and is scheduled to be released September 7th. The stunt has its own hashtag: #WheresGeorgieTO. The Warner Brothers Canada Instagram account states, “Have you found Georgie? Post your photo with #WheresGeorgieTO for a chance to #WIN a private screening of #ITMovie!” Get snapping Toronto. If you dare.

Gas leak reported on South Leaside construction site

Several blocks of south Leaside were blocked off from traffic Tuesday and many people were evacuated when crews replacing the water main broke a natural gas line Residents said the people in the block of Rumsey Rd. between Crofton Rd. and Parkhurst Blvd were ordered out of their homes. One woman, the owner of 182 Rumsey, was walking her dog only to hear sirens and rush home. Police would not let her into the street until she told them her ten-year old son was still in the home. She said the rupture occurred outside her front door. Police ordered a large bus to the scene to accommodate those who needed to rest for the estimated three-hour repair job to be done. No injuries were reported.

Molly’s Game and Downsizing screenings at TIFF 2017

We all remember when Jessica Chastain and the film crew of Molly’s Game visited South Bayview over the winter of 2016/2017. Molly’s Game, directed by Aaron Sorkin, was filmed in numerous locations throughout our great city.  Many Torontonians are excited to learn that the world premiere of the film will be at TIFF (Toronto International Film Festival) this year.

TIFF will also feature a special presentation and Canadian Premiere of Downsizing, starring Matt Damon and Kristen Wiig. Matt, Kristen and crew were spotted in Leaside last summer filming some scenes from this film.

DOWNSIZING: Matt Damon headlines a cast that includes Kristen Wiig, Christoph Waltz, Hong Chau, Laura Dern, Jason Sudeikis, Alec Baldwin, and Neil Patrick Harris in Alexander Payne’s sci-fi social satire about a man who chooses to shrink himself (literally) to simplify his life.

See you on the red carpet!
