The Ministry of Health has counted 92 new cases of COVID-19 infection in the 24-hour period ending at midnight. Three public health units reported 54 (or 59%) of those cases. Toronto cases leaped to 30, Peel had 17 and Ottawa 7. Testing was again at near-record levels with more than 30,000 tests performed.

Ontario has extended its declining COVID-19 record with a report of 79 new cases for the 24-hour period ending midnight. Toronto reported 25 cases a day after reporting just one. This is the seventh day of fewer than 100 new cases. Provincial labs turned around 28,000 test specimens on Saturday.

Environment Canada has issued a heat warning as temperatures in Toronto are forecast to exceed 30º Celsius on both Sunday and Monday. Hot weather is forecast all week. Weather Network

The Maple Leaf comeback win over the Columbus Blue Jackets really must be seen. Or watched again. Start near the end of the third period and gasp out loud as the Leafs score three goals in about four minutes to tie Game Four of the Stanley Cup qualifier 3-3. Then empty-arena heroics as Austin Matthews wins it for the Leafs in overtime. The series is being played at Scotiabank Arena with the deciding game on Sunday.

Remarks Friday by the deputy prime minister and by Premier Ford convey a sense of anger at the decision by US President Trump to impose a 10 percent tariff on Canadian-made aluminum. Ford said he had heard that tariffs are also coming on Canadian steel.

A release Friday afternoon says that the homeless persons hostel at 55/65 Broadway is scheduled to close by the end of August with the occupants being transferred elsewhere. No reference is made to where that might be.

Roehampton Hotel hostel could last three years

The same release notes, as reported, that the Roehampton Hotel at 808 Mt. Pleasant Rd. has been leased for two years as a homeless shelter and adds that there is an option to extend its use for that purpose to a third year. News release

Slow and steady does it for the Big City of Toronto as Friday’s count of COVID-19 new cases has found only 10 among a population of three million. Across the province, the Ministry of Health reports 88 cases. It’s the fifth day in a row Ontario has reported fewer than 100 new COVID-19 infections. The figures are drawn from more than 25,000 tests performed Thursday. There remain as many as 25,000 cases under investigation.

Weird anti-Jewish paranoia has been found running wild in a Toronto Polish-language newspaper called Glos Polski (Polish Voice) according to the National Post. It says the commentary appeared first as the leading front-page article in the March 25 edition of the paper, a weekly with offices on Royal York Rd. In discussing the origins of COVID-19, the story suggests that “biological weapons are being worked on in the US and Israel not by just any experts, but (under) the leadership of usually Jewish psychopaths.”
