Bank veteran Tiff Macklem named BoC boss starting June 2

Finance Minister Bill Morneau has appointed Tiff Macklem, the former senior deputy governor of the Bank of Canada, to take over the top job at the central bank. Macklem is currently the dean of the Rotman School of Management in Toronto but had spent decades with the Bank of Canada before starting that appointment.

Tiff Macklem, 59, was born in Montreal where his father was Chief Financial Officer of Birks. Macklem and his wife Rosemary have three children. He began his career at the bank in 1984 and was widely expected to win the contest for bank governor in 2013 but was beaten out by Stephen Poloz, who was then CEO of Export Development Canada. Costco plans to require customers to wear masks at stores

Costco has announced that it will progressively introduce a masks-only requirement for customers at its stores. According to a story on Red Flag Deals the “slow roll” introduction of essential mask-wearing is being worked out.

Pusateri employee tests positive

Pusateri’s has announced that one of its employees has tested positive for COVID-19. According to Pusateri’s, the stores visited by the infected employee include their Sherway Gardens and Avenue Road locations. Pusateri’s said the employee was normally assigned to head office.  His last day at work was April 24. CTV

Ministry report counts 459 new cases of COVID Thursday

The Ministry of Health has reported an overnight total of 459 new cases of COVID-19 infection Thursday. The figure is up from 347 cases Wednesday but well off the daily high of 640 cases reported on April 24. CTV calculates that deaths in this report hit 86, the highest number so far. In total, 1082 people are recorded as having died from the virus. Ministry website

Condo owners warned of limited capacity of TDSB schools

Potential buyers of a condo in the Sierra project at Eglinton Ave. E and Cardiff Rd. are being warned that they may not be able to admit their children to local schools. The issue is limited space. The warning to people moving into fast-growing Midtown is a standing policy of the Toronto District School Board.

Canada’s first “virtual parliament” brought MPs together Tuesday over Zoom with technological challenges from muted microphones, translation issues and slow internet. Recent low of 347 new COVID-19 cases reported Wednesday

The Ministry of Health has reported an overnight increase of 347 new cases of COVID-19 infection Wednesday. The number represents a substantial decrease over recent lows of 424 and continues a decline in cases seen in recent days. Ministry website

Hospitals run trial to see if HIV med can slow COVID-19

A news release Wednesday says a team of scientists from St. Michael’s Hospital, Sinai Health and Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre is launching a clinical trial to see if an existing drug used for HIV treatment and prevention may help prevent COVID-19 infection. Sunnybrook HSC release

Moore Ave Loblaws deep-cleaned as employee tests positive

Loblaws has issued a statement Tuesday that a staff member at the 301 Moore Ave. store recently tested positive on a presumptive test for COVID-19. The employee was in the store on April 27. In response, the company has conducted a “deep-clean and sanitization” of the store and expects to open Wednesday.  It has instructed any staff potentially exposed to stay home and self-isolate and is contacting customers who were recently at this store. We are writing to inform you that one of our team members from the Loblaws 301 Moore Avenue location in Toronto has recently tested positive on a presumptive test for COVID-19. Please note, this individual has not been in the store since April 27th.

Over and above our daily disinfectant protocols and the social distancing practices we put in place in response to COVID-19, we are taking the following steps:

1. Arranged for a thorough deep-clean and sanitization of the store. It is expected to open as usual tomorrow,
2. Reaching out to the local public health authority to investigate the team member’s recent shifts and direct contacts,
3. Instructed any potentially exposed team members to stay home and self-isolate, and
4. Out of an abundance of caution, we’re notifying customers who recently transacted at this store.

We understand that you may have questions and want to assure you that we take your safety, and the safety of our team, very seriously. We will work with the local public health team on any further directions and encourage you to reach out to them if you need more information.
