Kim McCullough/Leaside Wildcats

The coach of the Leaside Jr. Wildcats, Kim McCullough, will be inducted into the Leaside Sports Hall of Fame on November 15, 2019. She has been associated with the Wildcats association for close to 30 years. Starting as a preteen, playing with the Wildcats in the early 90s, Kim has represented the Leaside community at the highest provincial, national, and collegiate athletic levels, as a member of a historic group that established professional women’s hockey in Canada, and as an educator, instructor, and coach over the past 15 years. Her business, Total Female Hockey, is an inspiration and springboard for countless girls. Kim also coaches the Midget AA team.

Bianca Andreescu was eliminated from the WTA Finals on Wednesday after retiring from her match against Karolina Pliskova with a left knee injury. Andreescu was leading 2-0 in the first set, with Pliskova serving at 15-15 in the third game, when she came up limping after returning a serve and took a long medical timeout. “My knee twisted, I heard a crack. She (the trainer) evaluated me, she said it’s my meniscus … I can’t bend my knee at all. I don’t know, man, it’s cracking every time I walk,” said Bianca

Residents propose to move the box to a far corner of the park

Residents of Summerhill west of Yonge St. are working through the ABC Resident’s Association to move a large so-called District Station installed by Enbridge Inc. in Jay Macpherson Green at Avenue Rd. and Macpherson Ave. It has been there since December 2017 and the association says City of Toronto consent requirements for placement of such a large box were somehow ignored. Previously a smaller facility was fully buried. Yonge and Roxborough News

After over two years of study, meetings and considering options the ABC Residents Association believes it is in the best interests of the community that this large and imposing box be relocated to a less prominent area. Will the construction be inconvenient? Yes. However, if the box is not moved, it will be in its present location forever, detracting from the Park’s beauty and the community’s enjoyment of an unobstructed green space in our community. To replace the lost trees, appropriate species, in appropriate locations for tree growth, will be planted to revitalize the aging tree canopy. ABCRA is having a tree replacement plan prepared and will post it on the ABCRA website in the next few days. Don Valley West Councillor Jaye Robinson says she will be taking time away from City Hall to focus on her health after being diagnosed with breast cancer. In a statement released Tuesday, Ms Robinson, who is also chair of the Toronto Transit Commission, said she recently received the diagnosis and is currently undergoing an “extensive treatment plan. Over the coming months, I will need to take time away from City Hall to focus on my health. I have an exceptional and experienced team and together we will continue to serve the residents of Ward 15 and Toronto,” she wrote in her statement.“I will continue to work on behalf of the TTC and Toronto transit riders with support from the vice-chair and the strong team we have in place.”

Mayor fully committed

Mayor John Tory said the City is “fully committed” to supporting the Ward 15 Councillor during her treatment. “Since her election in 2010, Jaye has established herself as one of the toughest and most determined councillors at City Hall. Even after she was diagnosed and began treatment, Jaye was at City Hall last Thursday leading the TTC Commission meeting. I’m confident that strength, grit, and determination will serve her well as she undergoes treatment,” he wrote in an emailed statement Tuesday.

A construction worker suffered what are being called significant injuries when he was trapped between a construction elevator and the wall of the building eight storeys up on Broadway Ave between Redpath Ave. and Mt. Pleasant Rd. Monday. The careful extrication of the victim took well over an hour, according to TFS sources. Down below, traffic was paralyzed on Broadway and on Roehampton Ave, where overflow traffic encountered more single-lane construction slowdowns. The quadrant northwest of Eglinton and Mt. Pleasant is largely impassable most business days because of high-rise construction.
