Super Channel says Best Buy, Staples helping content theft
by •
The CBC reports Sunday that the Canadian movie and drama series carrier Super Channel has filed a lawsuit against four Canadian retailers for allegedly selling android box “pirate devices” and educating customers on how to use them to watch TV without paying for it. In a court document filed in Federal Court this week, Super Channel accuses Best Buy, Staples, Canada Computers and London Drugs of copyright infringement, claiming their employees are “urging” customers to pirate online content using streaming devices that are sold in store. The four retailers “are advertently contributing to the creation of a culture of widespread infringement and theft,” Super Channel alleges in the document. “Their actions are high-handed and unfair to their customers and causing damage to the plaintiff.” Also listed as defendants in the lawsuit are customers who bought the “pirate devices” and received accompanying advice in store. They’re currently listed as “John Doe customers” because Super Channel doesn’t have their names, although it plans to pursue this information. Super Channel is owned by Edmonton-based Allarco Entertainment. CBC

Jeff Bezos’ subway tabloid The Express has bid a bitter farewell to Washington commuters with a headline reading “Hope you enjoy your stinkin’ phones.” Circulation had dropped from nearly 200,000 in recent years to about 130,000 copies a day prompting the paper’s corporate owner, The Washington Post, to stop publication of the tab. Of course, there will be no tag days for Mr. Bezos, owner of that scary Amazon thing which is currently eating the world.

Rowe Farms, the specialty grocery store at 1617 Bayview Ave., is closed for renovations, according to a sign on the door of the now-closed shop. There is no mention of when it might re-open. September marks slightly more than five years since Rowe Farms opened on Bayview. Next door at 1613, work has begun on changes to accommodate a new restaurant. The premises has been leased and waiting for other work to be done. Earlier this month a gas line was extended (below) from the west side of the street to the 1613 location, apparently to serve the restaurant stove.
