BC waste-to-energy furnace will burn Manila trash in a jiffy
by •
The media hand-wringing over that shipload of Canadian garbage seems silly. Chris Allen, boss of the Burnaby waste-to-energy incinerator says in this report that the whole stinking lot will be dead ashes by next week. The incinerator, similar to one in Clarington in Durham Region, burns garbage cleanly and produces energy in the process. Makes sense to us. Then, One Bad Boy has won the Queen’s Plate. It was a good race with Avie’s Flatter. Below that, the hilarious story of a smooth British guy, Zack MacLeod Pinsent, who dresses like a Regency gentleman all the time. Why not? Finally, charming video of Meghan and Charles meeting the Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees as they play in the UK. Fun.

Gramps at Leaside PS, precious sharks and July 1 weekend
by •
Around home this Saturday, we have a wonderful shot (upper left) from 1937 of a gentleman who attended Bessborough Public School when it was still Leaside Public School. There are posts separately by both his daughter and granddaughter. Nice. Then at upper right are two precious “baby shark do-do-dos” posted to Instagram by Shining Star Performing Arts at 852 Eglinton East. It says the “pre-k’s rocked their under-the-sea performance to mark the last day of school.” No doubt. Centre-right are some enterprising young people selling beads for charity this weekend at Davisville Park. Below that we see Leaside fireworks impresario Dave Bryant preparing for the annual show at LHS in 2017. The event goes again Monday night. At left is a slightly-sinister looking 1969 Mercedes limousine seen on Millwood Rd. on Thursday. Below that, further reminders of long-weekend fun.
Scarborough Walmart incident post well read at Leaside FB

An upsetting incident posted by a TD Bank employee who was shopping with her son at the Eglinton Ave. E. Walmart has drawn a lot of interest after it was re-posted to Leaside Community by Anthony Reagan. There are grab shots taken by the woman as she is being attacked by two other women. They had interjected themselves into the woman’s shopping as she looked at a T-shirt that said Pride. You can probably imagine the rest. By noon Saturday, there were 55 responses

He was there to kick off the City’s outdoor pool season. The mayor’s acknowledgment of this known rite of summer delighted the children. But take a look at the ho-hum reaction of the lifeguard in the foreground.

by •
George Cope will retire as CEO of BCE at the start of next year. He is 57. It will be the end of a tumultuous 12 years in which Bell went from having doubtful solvency in 2007 to ownership of a huge array of lucrative businesses unrelated to phones. Mr. Cope’s aggressive and money-making style has left no doubt that BCE is indeed solvent. It is valued today at $15 billion. The new president will be Mirko Bibic.

China temper tantrum as jets buzz HMCS Regina off Taiwan
by •
President Xi was stamping his little feet, apparently, when the order went out for two Chinese fighter jets to buzz HMCS Regina as it operated in international waters in the East China Sea. The Chinese temper tantrum over the entirely legal detention of Huawei heir and CFO Meng Wanzhou took that turn Monday, a new twist on the outburst that has seen citizens detained and agricultural products banned. Canadian Global Affairs Institute fellow Matthew Fisher wrote in a column on the website of the think tank that the Su-30 fighters flew within 300 metres of the bow of the frigate HMCS Regina on Monday. Fisher, who was aboard the ship, said that although the display was more aggressive than previous encounters between the Canadian Navy and Chinese warplanes, it was not considered dangerous. China’s short memory has blotted out how Canadian wheat saved millions of lives there when Mao Tse Tung was busy destroying Chinese agriculture.
