Robinson meets SmartCentres about draining Lake Leaside

Councillor Robinson has posted to Leaside Community to say that she has met officials at the SmartCentres REIT about the flooded land known as Lake Leaside. She says she reiterated the urgency of ensuring this site is drained as quickly as possible. A senior executive from SmartCentres confirmed to her that it has submitted an application for a Discharge Permit and has a contractor on standby to initiate the drainage process immediately following approval. Robinson says: “I’ve met with the Acting General Manager of Toronto Water and asked him to accelerate the permit review process for this site. I will be in touch as soon as I have confirmation that the permit has been issued.” Much of this conforms with efforts made by the previous Councillor, Jon Burnside, to get the area drained in 2017 after it was reported by The Bulldog. A primary issue is the capacity of the sewer system to handle this water. Then and again in 2018 (although not as seriously) runoff filled the excavation which was dug to permit construction of new retail space. Here is what the Bulldog wrote about that on April 11, 2017.

Lake Leaside on Wicksteed Ave. no doubt holds many untold stories of plans delayed, retail development disappointments and big box entrepreneurs who are busy fixing business in the US. We can only guess. But it is now years since the SmartCentres interests began furiously digging at the site. Then everything seemed to go silent. Insiders who protested the development in the beginning called it the Walmart Plaza. Even then there was no confirmation that it was the ambitious boys from Bentonville, Arkansas who had done a deal to build there. Walmart and others have faced the Amazon challenge in recent times. The Bulldog has no desire to see purchases delivered to a nearby telephone pole by drone, but there seems no denying an altered retail style is at hand. Does it include Walmart Plaza, or more recently, Lake Leaside?

Fans fill McSorley’s for European Champions football match

Left, fans filled Bayview Ave. bars including McSorley’s Saturday to watch the European Champions League game between Liverpool and Tottenham. As Jacob Bogage of the Washington Post writes, none of it was pretty but Liverpool won’t care. Liverpool 2, Tottenham 0. But upper right, there were other things to do as we see children watch the inflation of a bouncy castle in Father Caufield Parkette on Cameron Crescent. Time for the annual street party, which, as our archives reveal, is always fun. Below that, some stunning children’s art is displayed on a fence at Blake Street Public School at 21 Boultbee Ave. Take a look at these wonderful depictions all of them signed at the bottom by the artist. Below this text are posters for events not to be missed. Jurassic Park North will permit socializing and group viewing of the Raptors-Warriors Game 2 from in and (we believe) near the Amsterdam Barrell House Sunday evening. Sunday afternoon will see the Cycle Toronto Don Valley Midtown gang push off from the corner of Rykert Cres and Broadway Ave. for a ride in Serena Gundy Park. Nice.

Hydro One “leaking line” baffles crew at Millwood/Redway

A “leaking line” of electrical current has led to the days-long closure of the westbound side of the rail underpass at Millwood Rd. and Redway Rd. with Hydro One crews working Saturday to try to “pinpoint” the offending line. If the explanation of how a hydro line leak befuddles simple reporters we may be sure the traffic horrors created by the effort to repair it has infuriated motorists. This week has seen the pileup of vehicles at all hours on Laird, Millwood and Southvale. The pavement under the closed lane is a patchwork of holes, iron plates covering holes and some holes that have been repaved. There doesn’t appear to be any way of guessing just when this might be fixed. Both lanes were open Sunday but work may resume Monday.

Roehampton sidewalk replacement sends people into road

Residents are dodging backhoes and plastic cones on Roehampton Ave. west of Bayview as work proceeds on new sidewalks and what appear to be miscellaneous repairs. Lots more of this to come in the Spring and Summer of 2019.

Worst road prize for Eglinton seems like especially bad joke

The CAA has announced that its regular poll of drivers has called Eglinton Ave. the worst road in Ontario. Um, yeah we noticed. It’s what happens when you spend billions ripping up a City to build a subway. Or does the CAA know that? For years Eglinton Ave. has been dangerous and unsafe by definition. The worst-road designation seems like a bad joke. Anyway, here’s City’s Shauna Hunt playing the thing straight.
