Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp in apparent global outage

Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp were temporarily down early Sunday. All three social media platforms, including Facebook Messenger, were affected by the outage. Downdetector.com, a site that monitors site outages, shows Facebook had been down since 6:30 a.m. ET in much of the world, with thousands of reported outages concentrated in the northeastern U.S., Europe and the Philippines. It appeared to be back up and running for most users by 9 a.m. ET — CBC.

Man in bus shelter badly hurt in hit-run at College, Spadina

A man of 20 has been critically injured when an SUV mounted the median bus shelter curb and smashed into the shelter at College St and Spadina Ave about 2 a.m. Sunday. The vehicle fled the scene. The man is said to be suffering life-threatening injuries.

No winning ticket for Saturday’s $7 million Lotto 649 prize

No winning ticket was sold for the $7 million jackpot in Saturday night’s Lotto 649 draw. However, the guaranteed $1 million prize was claimed by a ticket holder in Ontario. The jackpot for the next Lotto 649 draw on April 17 will be approximately $9 million.

Police have new security measures for busy sports venues

Police issued this alert Saturday about traffic control and general security in the area of Scotibank Arena and Rogers Centre.

The Toronto Police Service would like to make the public aware of upcoming traffic restrictions and security enhancements that will be in place for the 2019 NBA and NHL playoffs runs as well as the Toronto Blue Jays season. To ensure the safe flow of pedestrian and vehicular traffic, a number of road restrictions will be in effect at the end of every playoff game. There will also be pre-game restrictions on dates where both the Scotiabank Arena and Rogers Centre have overlap events scheduled.

Please note that Rees Street, northbound, from Lakeshore Boulevard West will only be accessible to WheelTrans vehicles and other mobility-accessible services, as well as those patrons parking at the Rogers Centre. A staging area for those using accessibility services will be set up on Rees Street, at Bremner Boulevard for gate 7 and off Blue Jays Way, in front of the Marriott hotel, when entering through gate 13.  The condominiums in the area as well as the businesses have been provided with security passes for their use to allow them access during closures, in an effort to alleviate any disruption in their attending work or home. ice, in partnership with the Rogers Centre and Scotiabank Arena are encouraging people to use public transit or other carpool options.

Fire badly damages Ukrainian Cultural Centre in Hamilton

Fire has badly damaged the Ukrainian Cultural Centre on Kenilworth Ave in Hamilton overnight. The blaze at the two-storey east-end building Avenue broke out shortly after midnight when the centre was empty. No one was hurt. An official with Hamilton Fire says that when crews first arrived on scene flames could be seen coming from the roof of the building. A runoff election for the Ukrainian president will be held April 21 and Ukrainians living in Canada and the US are eligible to vote. It seems possible the centre might have played a role in that voting.

“Impaired” driver hurts 2 as he drives into King road patio

Two people were injured and are recovering after a driver suspected of being impaired crashed his car into a patio built on the roadway of the new “carless” King St. The injuries are said to be not life-threatening. This occurred about 1.30 p.m. Saturday

What? Huge Stratolaunch satellite-launcher finally airborne

This Saturday has seen the enormous Stratolaunch satellite launcher aircraft take off from the Mojave desert north of Los Angeles. The six-engined megajet with the wingspan of an American football field is the product of Stratolaunch Systems, the company founded in 2011 by the late Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen. It is described as a giant flying launch pad, designed to hurtle satellites into low Earth orbit. It aims to offer the military, private companies and even NASA itself a more economical way to get into space.




Motorcyclist, 24, dead in crash with vehicle in Mississauga

A motorcyclist has died in a collision with a vehicle in Mississauga at Winston Churchill Blvd and Credit Valley Rd just after midnight Saturday. The man, 24, died in hospital.

1 a.m. street corner clash sees man, 25, shot at King/Brant

A street-corner argument between a pedestrian, 25, and three persons in a car at King West and Brant Sts. prompted someone in a red-coloured Lexus (below) to open fire on the man. As many as four shots were fired. Remarkably, the victim is said to be recovering from his wound. Police say he was standing on a sidewalk when he became involved in the yelling match. Witnesses or others are asked to call 14 Division, (416) 808-1400.

No winning ticket was sold for the $16 million jackpot in Friday night’s Lotto Max draw. That means the jackpot for the next draw on April 19 will grow to approximately $25 million.
