Police say that a woman has been taken into custody Monday evening at the Summerhill Line One subway station after reports of a person waving about a box cutter on and off of a train. The person emerged from a train at Summerhill, according to tweets on the TPS Operations account. There were apparently no injuries.

New York’s Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 507 points or 2.1 per cent Monday, and the TSX was at a two-year low as investors found more than enough reason to continue selling. The dogged downturn seems easily justified by the US-China clash, unrest in Europe and the prospect of an unplanned Brexit. A common concern Monday was that the U.S. Federal Reserve’s will be too bullish with interest rates. It all seems to be feeding into the nearly three-month shellacking taken by stocks worldwide. The Dow was down 507 points Monday and the TSX composite off 232.

Hement Bhagwani, the seemingly tireless Indian celebrity cook and entrepreneur, has decided to take a break from the pressure of his many restaurant businesses. Two of these are the Indian Street Food Co., 1701 Bayview Ave. and the Amaya Express chain, one of which was until recently at 1574 Bayview. “I needed a break,” Mr. Bhagwani has told the Star. “I’ve opened 34 restaurants since 2002 and didn’t stop. I probably sponsored 40 cooks from Dubai and India, so there’s probably a guy who previously worked at an Amaya in most of the Indian restaurants in the city. But I stopped enjoying it, so it’s time to step back.” it is said that the new owner of the Bhagwani interests has hospitality experience in Iran. That  seems to relate to new signage at the former Amaya storefront which now reads Taste of Persia.

Mayor Tory issued a statement Monday inviting young people across Toronto to apply now for summer recreation jobs These are positions at summer camps, aquatic programs and other recreation positions. In addition to accepting applications online, the City will host a recreation recruitment event on Tuesday, December 18 from 5 to 8 p.m. at North Kipling Community Centre. A rally in support of Alberta’s oil industry drew hundreds of supporters who cheered as speakers delivered a message that the rest of Canada needs to be thankful for the prosperity the province provides. “We aren’t just a monumental cash cow for the government. A man has been rescued from a fire at a home on Harvie Ave. southeast of Eglinton Ave. and Caledonia Rd. He was unconscious when found early Monday inside the home but was resuscitated by the fire service. He is believed to be in his 50s.

There were two winning tickets for the $16 million jackpot in Saturday night’s Lotto 649 draw. One was sold in Ontario, the other in the Prairies, and each is worth just over $7.9 million. The draw’s guaranteed $1 million prize was claimed by a ticket holder in Ontario. The jackpot for the next Lotto 649 draw on December 19 will be approximately $5 million. A one-inch gas main that was ruptured when hit by a vehicle has been capped off but repairs remain to be completed, Enbridge sources say. The line on a building on Danforth Ave. at Dawes Rd. was struck by a van as seen in the photos above tweeted by Jeremy Cohn of Global News. CP24 reported that a woman driving the van suffered minor injuries. Apparently the building struck remains without heat late Saturday.
