Brunch Story gets good reviews from many at FB group

Breakfast, brunch and lunch restaurant Brunch Story is favorably reviewed by several members in a thread started Saturday by administrator Robyn Hochglaube at the Leaside Community page. It’s heartening to hear. Along with Sophie’s Kitchen and Green Canoe, Brunch Story is offering the type of cuisine so many residents enjoy (bring on the eggs). Brunch Story is at 874 Eglinton beside Starbucks. It is owned by Ji-seon Moon. She is the mom of two and she told The South Bayview Bulldog that she settled at this location because the schools are so good. Her teen son started at Leaside High School this month. The reviews in LC are universally good. Hardworking Korean friends have much to contribute. Ji-seon Moon opens Brunch Story at Eglinton/Laird Sunday

Canada tales of inspiring kid, CRA fraudsters, flu shot soon

The clean cut kid at the left is Sabarish Gnanamamoorthy. He’s a genius at the age of 15. His intelligence and maturity will take your breath away. Good for Canada. Then, it’s not too much to describe the tax scam phone racket as a crisis. Most people have had many calls. Why can’t authorities get a handle on it? Below that, Dr. Danuta Skowronski thinks you are probably “pre-loaded” for the flu season this year but her advice is not to take a chance. Lastly, the Canadian soap opera called the TransCanada Pipeline. It makes you want to cry. Is it any wonder John A Macdonald lied to get the CPR built in 1865? Simply put, there would be no Canada without our east-west links.

Friends celebrate 10th anniversary of Andy Elder’s Grilltime

Friends of Andy Elder and his Grilltime on Laird gathered Saturday in the event space at the Amsterdam Brewery to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the specialty shop. Councillor Jon Burnside took the microphone at the Amsterdam Brewery event space to congratulate Andy on his in-store and catering success. The two men have been friends for 30 years. Grilltime has been located at 62 Laird Drive since it opened. Guests dined on delicious food samplings like Mac and Cheese with smoked brisket and roasted tomato salsa and also a soft taco with Fogo Island Cod. There was a unique Bloody Caesar bar with a garnish of beef tenderloin wrapped in bacon Live music was provided by the Denise Leslie Trio.

SALUTE TO LOCAL BUSINESS

In his remarks, Elder thanked loyal customers for support over the years and made a special request that they show the same loyalty to other local enterprises. He noted that the rapid change being seen in Leaside and elsewhere can represent a threat to local stores and services. More and more big box and large outside businesses are entering the area.

AMAZING COUNCILLOR

Turning to the coming municipal election, Elder called his longtime friend “an amazing Councillor” and urged people to work hard for his re-election. Special effort will be required because the restructured Don Valley West makes Burnside the incumbent of just 35 percent of the riding. Another ten percent is up for grabs in the newly-added area west of Bayview Ave. which was formerly in St. Paul’s Ward 22. Andy urged friends to make a special effort to return his friend to office.

FRIENDS PRESENT

Among well-known friends present were realtor Charlene Kalia, Fiona Boylan of COBS Bread, Jeff Hohner of the Leaside Pub, Alistair Baxter of Lexus on the Park with his wife Deb, Peter Neal of Neal Brothers Foods with wife Lara, Robert Fripp, Carol Burtin Fripp and son Will Fripp and Trae Zammit of the Smokin’ Cigar on Bayview Ave.

RIDING BUMPER ON LANSDOWNE BUS

Instagram video shows someone riding on the back of the 47A Lansdowne bus. The TTC is upset although the dangerous behaviour seems somehow timeless among a strain of young men. In the video, which can be seen and heard on the City News website, the occupants of the vehicle with the dash cam seem to find it amusing.

Can an in-your-face jock do his job and still keep his job?

The tricky business of being a provocative radio host without losing your job for offending people is playing out in Winnipeg. Former in-your-face DJ Dave Wheeler is suing Roger Media for firing him because, as he contends, he was merely doing his job. The wrongful dismissal suit seeks more than $1.4 million in damages from 92.1 CITI FM and parent Rogers. In June Wheeler was talking about the dilemma of Scarlett Johansson who withdrew from a film called Rub and Tug because she was facing backlash after agreeing to play a trans man.  Wheeler made a remark comparing transgender people to actors who “pretend to be different things.” One quote is: “If someone is born human (and) they pretend to be a dog (it) is not right to agree with them for the sake of their feelings.” The suit contends it was an express or implied term of Wheeler’s employment with Rogers that his on-air persona was to be provocative and controversial and he was to push the boundaries and engage listeners in controversial social topics.

Scattered outages remain as chilly Saturday greets City

Crews continue to repair downed lines Saturday from damage caused mostly by fallen branches and trees on Friday afternoon. The Hydro Outage map shows scattered dark spots. South Leaside seems to be fairly hard hit.  Below, video from Toronto and Ottawa where a tornado has struck. A cold front has brought more than a hint of Fall to South Bayview.
