“Godfather” tone as Trump quietly threatens Canada, allies

Here are four videos which include ongoing sinister threats that if you upset Donald Trump “that’s going to cost a lot of money for the people of Canada.” Godfather stuff. We also hear from Trump aide Peter Navarro apologizing for his “place in Hell” clanger as well as former Prime Minister Mulroney who says this situation is serious but not necessarily lethal. He concedes he has never seen language like this.

Trump talks about deal with “very talented” Kim Jong-un

If Kim/Trump love-in goes wrong, will Ottawa be to blame?

Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un have shaken hands in Singapore and begun their historic meeting. Trump has said he will walk away if necessary but no one quite knows what’s necessary. Kim has to be having the time of his life. We know his taste in company is satisfied by a giggle or two with Dennis Rodman. Meanwhile, the Trump White House has characterized Canada’s objections to steel and aluminium tariffs as an attempt to make the President look weak prior to this meeting. It cannot be a big leap to blame Ottawa if the meeting is a disaster.

Erin Parsons awarded the Ian Shaw Memorial Scholarship

Erin Parsons has been awarded the second annual Ian Shaw Memorial Scholarship by the Toronto Leaside Girls Hockey Association. Erin has been an active member of the Leaside ice hockey and Withrow ball hockey community for a number of years, as both a player and as an official (ref). Board member Mark Schrutt said Erin has acted as a great ambassador and role model in Leaside. The award was given by the late Mr. Shaw’s daughter Jennifer with members of the association present at Leaside Arena. The first such scholarship was given in 2017 to recognize and reward a young woman’s commitment to hockey, community and education. It is named in the memory of long-time board member and referee-in-chief Ian Shaw and is funded by his family. The annual scholarship recognizes a graduating member of the TLGHA who has distinguished herself through her commitment as a player, an official and a member of her community. The scholarship, in the amount of $500, is directed to offset the costs of post-secondary education.

Traffic engineers may have the secret of this crash-ridden corner. It was this way before LRT backups too. Some suggest it is the multiple rights-of-way residing with pedestrians, Bayview traffic and finally east-west traffic. Who knows. This took place Monday.

Starbucks closed, writer ponders how to control thinking

All 1,110 Canadian Starbucks stores are closed for Monday afternoon as employees receive mandatory anti-bias training, a move prompted by an April incident in which a manager at a store in Philadelphia called the police on two black men who were sitting at a table waiting for a friend to join them before ordering. This effort by Starbucks has inspired an article in the Globe and Mail that appears to explore the challenge of getting inside the human brain and altering not just behaviour, but anything bad that may be lurking there. Canadian Starbucks stores are closing Monday afternoon for anti-bias training. But does this type of education work?

New Costco confirms to The Bulldog it will carry groceries

The South Bayview Bulldog has been told authoritatively that the Costco store soon to open on Overlea Blvd will carry groceries. It is also understood there will be a limited offering of Halal meat. Recent hours have seen Facebook postings from people who were apparently told by personnel at the site that the store will not be selling food. In email Monday a reliable source within the companies associated with Costco said “rest assured there will be food. It will be like all other Costcos with the exception of the gas bar of course.” The City negotiated an arrangement with Costco to build this store without a gas bar. In 2016, Iqbal Halal Foods on Thorncliffe Park Drive had objected to the OMB about the Costco. It later withdrew this objection after negotiations with Costco. The store is set to open sometime this summer.

Trump’s war, Putin’s war, Canada beware of friend and foe

The alien world of animosity between the US and Canada (Trump’s war) and the social media mischief of Vladimir Putin are explored in these videos. The implications of a trade war with the US should sober Canadians. In the end, we face an opponent, if it comes to that, ten times our size. Not a winning match-up. Russia, on the other hand, may try to influence the 2019 election it is said and that might take the form of making us dislike the US even more.
