Rush to buy Canadian engagement coat crashes the site

The public fascination with the romance and planned wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle translated in an unexpected way Monday. The white coat which Meghan wore for the engagement announcement drew thousands of buyers to the website of the Canadian brand Line The Label. Reports indicate the demand crashed the site. The coat is sold out in Toronto. Bazaar said that Meghan was dressed in the chic white wrap coat, emerald green dress and strappy nude pumps. The most notable attraction was Meghan’s engagement ring, designed by Prince Harry himself. Some of the diamonds in the cushion-cut ring reportedly came from one of Princess Diana’s brooches.

Argonauts welcome home for fans old and new Tuesday

Postmedia, Torstar swap small newspapers, close most

Postmedia and Torstar have swapped more than 40 local community newspapers with each other, and most are destined to be shut down. The media companies announced in a press release Monday that Postmedia would buy two dozen community newspapers and two free commuter dailies from Torstar, and at the same time sell 17 newspapers — 15 community papers and two big-city free commuter dailies — to Torstar. No cash changed hands during the deal, as the papers “have approximately similar fair values,” Postmedia said. Only four papers — St. Catharines Standard, Niagara Falls Review, Welland Tribune and Peterborough Examiner — will continue to operate  CBC

COMMENT SUGGESTS TAX PLAY

A reader wrote this comment to the story: “I don’t understand why Post Media and Torstar are going through this exchange of newspapers only to shut most of them down. Why not just shut them without trading them? Perhaps it is more tax advantageous? If so, that shouldn’t be allowed.”

Woman, 78, gravely hurt crossing at 4-way stop intersection

Police are continuing to sort out an accident on Friday at Verobeach Blvd at Indrio Rd. when a 78-year-old woman was crossing the quiet intersection northwest of Weston Rd. and Sheppard Ave. It is a four-way stop and the photo above shows the view of the driver, 44, of a new Dodge Ram pickup truck as he headed south. He made a left hand turn and hit the woman as she tried to cross. The police report does not say whether she had her back to the truck or might possibly have been going the other way (north) and seen it coming. But she suffered life threatening injuries in this broad daylight occurrence. It was reported at 8.40 a.m.

End of NAFTA would cut .55% off Canada’s GDP says study

A report on the impact of the termination of the North American Free Trade Agreement says that it would trim just over half a percentage point from Canada’s economy. It finds that the end of NAFTA would shave 0.55 per cent off Canada’s GDP, push 25,000 to 50,000 Canadians from the workforce and reduce exports by 2.8 per cent. The report comes from Dan Ciuriak, the former head of computer modeling for Canada’s foreign-affairs ministry. Canadian Press reports Monday that Mr. Ciuriak, now a private consultant, spent recent weeks analyzing the numbers for a report for the CD Howe think tank.

BAD, BUT NOT AS BAD AS EXPECTED

The damage predicted in his report is the equivalent of a noticeable economic downturn, albeit far less than the 2.5 per cent GDP loss he said he was expecting to find in an interview last month, as he began his work. Ciuriak said the damage would be almost completely offset if the original 1987 Canada-U.S. Free Trade Agreement were to survive the NAFTA. The beneficial impact of the old free trade agreement was the ease with which US automakers — Ford and General Motors — made cars in Canada and shipped them to the US. Preserving the Canada-Mexico partnership in NAFTA would have only a very slight impact on the damage if the U.S. leaves, Ciuriak found.

CRA checks postal codes to ferret out flush tax evaders

The CBC say the Canada Revenue Agency is checking postal codes to find any hint that the homeowners there are not paying as much as CRA thinks they should. What’s the matter with you? It might be Post Road, Chestnut Park or Bessborough Drive but the tax collection agency is on the job. The story Monday says this search is among “the wealthiest neighbourhoods” but no definition is given. They’re looking for undeclared wealth, signs that a taxpayer is actually richer than their income tax filings suggest. “Comparing someone’s lifestyle — cars, boats, houses — to their reported income helps us identify people who are non-compliant,” said CRA spokesperson Zoltan Csepregi. Details of the initiative, launched in the summer, were obtained by CBC News under the Access to Information Act.

Harry and Meghan to wed in Spring amid “excited” royals

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will marry in the Spring, according to a statement released Monday. She is an actress, humanitarian campaigner and lifestyle blogger. She has also been divorced. Buckingham Palace released the news with another statement soon after from Harry’s brother, Prince William and his pregnant wife Kate, welcoming Markle to the royal family. “We are very excited for Harry and Meghan.” They said in a statement. “It has been wonderful getting to know Meghan and to see how happy she and Harry are together.” The announcement means another grand royal wedding is in the offing — the first since William and Kate married in 2011. Bowal a 2-goal hero as Cats beat league-leading Aeros 3-1

The hockey gods were smiling on the Leaside Junior Wildcats Sunday as they sashayed into Canlan Arena at York University and thumped the league-leading Toronto Aeros 3-1. The Cats three-star alignment begins with Myah Bowal scoring two on the normally invincible Aeros. She struck twice in the third period to break the game open. It had been tied since Mackenzie Macdonald scored at 14.56 of the first for Leaside to keep them even with the Aeros. Toronto’s Teagan Grant had scored at 3.09 on a power play. The second period was scoreless and the Aeros were unable to answer Bowal’s offensive in the third. Quinn Johnston was there with assists on goals by Macdonald and Bowal. Boxscore
