Health Canada has recalled as many as 61,000 dishwashers made by Bosch, Thermador, Gaggenau, Kenmore and Jenn-Air. They were made between January 2013 and May 2015 and are being recalled because the power cords can overheat and possibly spark a fire. Pictures show the recalled washers and their serial numbers. There have been no injuries reported, but Health Canada says there are five reports of property damage in the United States, where 408,000 affected dishwashers have been sold. Anyone who owns one of these dishwashers is advised to stop using it immediately and call the Safety Recall Hotline at 1-888-965-5813 for a free inspection and repair.

Old Ford at hockey and this Belsize Drive sign needs fixing
by •
Upper left, this smart looking 56 Ford was gracing the parking lot at Leaside arena last weekend as those it is attached to played hockey. It has 1950s whitewall tires too. To the right, the leaning sign of Belsize Drive outside COBs needs some help. The Councillor’s office has been notified because he can make the wheels at the Toronto Clamshell move faster. Below that, another sign left out for the garbage on Roxborough St. was quickly taken. It says “The Party Stop Is Here.” Finally at bottom Rudy Limeback (@rudydotca) took this ghostly shot of a vestige of the Canada Varnish Company (Canvarco) this summer. It’s still there on Canvarco Drive but for how long.
Sorbara, Loughed not guilty of electoral bribery judge finds
by •
Mr. Justice Howard Borenstein has dismissed all charges against former Liberal CEO Pat Sorbara and Sudbury businessman Gerry Lougheed on the grounds that the Crown did not have enough evidence to convict them of bribery under the election act. Central to this interpretation was the defense claim that a bribe must be offered to a person who is a confirmed candidate, not just someone seeking a nomination, for the act to apply. The defence team for former Liberal CEO Pat Sorbara and Sudbury businessman Gerry Lougheed had been arguing for the last year that they should have never have been charged with bribery. They formally asked Borenstein to declare them not guilty two weeks ago and he took it under consideration. Today they are cleared of all charges. The Crown contended that someone is a candidate as soon as he or she announces an intention to run and that the law should protect the electoral process from bribery from the very beginning.

Air Canada flight lands at US airport without permission
by •
An Air Canada flight landed at San Francisco airport Sunday after it had been told not to by traffic controllers who were uncertain if the runway was fully clear. The landing was uneventful but it seems the Air Canada crew did not reply to radio transmissions nor to a so-called “red-light gun” alert used to communicate with planes when the radio fails. Air Canada has so far not commented. The flight originated in Montreal. CBC
Scary “Stone Cold Forest” chills children, parents on Belsize
by •
The Evil Empress of the Cold Stone Forest stalks Belsize Drive near 384 at Halloween as the macabre tradition of this householder is continued on the front lawn. Again in 2017, a truly terrifying story, this one a warning of innocent but unwise twins Jane and Jess who ventured into the forest. Today they haunt us all as cold stone victims of the Empress. Remember this well dear reader and while you’re giggling take a look at the memorable depiction of Peter, Peter Pencil Eater from the year 2012 which is posted lower right below the text of this year’s morality tale.
All were warned to never tread
In the deep black forest on the river bed
An evil empress banished there
drained blood from veins and breath from air
Twins Jane and Jess were not to blame
Hide and seek was their favourite game
So early morning, out they dashed
Across the bridge, down separate paths
Jane would hide and Jess would seek
But not long in, Jane’s legs went weak
Calling out to end the game
Jess appeared, panicked and lame
“We must get out, we’re not alone
Hundreds of children have turned to stone!”
They made it out but not quite out
The neighbours said they heard a shout…
Some early mornings, through the glistening dew
You can catch a glimpse of the tiny two
Wild dash into street sends man flying off hood of a car
by •
This is instructive video shown on City News of two men dashing out into Parkside Drive without any real consideration of whether running fast will really get them there. For one of the two, the dash just doesn’t do it. He bounces off the front of a car that wasn’t even on his limited radar. Luckily he’ll be okay.
Looting by rioters? No, merely Sears liquidation at Fairview
by •
The weekend work of shoppers at the Fairview Mall in Sears (and other locations across Canada) is being clucked-clucked about on Twitter while at the same time others say it’s not as bad as the mess made at Target. By the end of January such scenes will be history as Sears passes into memory. Twitter photos with thanks: @kenkchow @melliejulie @Russ_FTW Noted by Jill Beauty-Vixen.ca
Young carver’s pumpkin menace magic Monday merriment
by •
This wonderful pumpkin menace is the work of work of the young niece of local news shooter Tony Smyth (@LateNightCam). Then to the right side we see the Leaside Flames Minor Bantams, champions in their class at the Fall Classic Tournament in Ottawa over the weekend. Well done guys. Below that, left and right, pictures of the remodelled Starbucks at the SmartCentre on Laird Drive snapped and posted to Twitter by Dr. Tony Eskander of Michael Garron Hospital. Then, two pictures that show what we’re going to get at Yonge and Roselawn from the present owner-developer (Main and Main) and what we briefly thought might be there when this was published by the previous owner-developer (Rockford). Bit of a let down.
Leave party while it’s still fun says Ward 32’s McMahon
by •
Mary-Margaret McMahon will not contest next year’s Civic General Election she said Monday. “I believe term limits are healthy for a city, for neighbourhoods, and for politicians,” McMahon said in a release. “I believe being a politician is a public service, not a career.” She was elected to represent Ward 32 (Beaches-East York) at City Council in 2010 and sits on Mayor Tory’s Executive Committee. She is also the Chair of the Parks and Environment Committee. “Leave the party while you are still having fun! Give someone else a chance.”
