F18 jet fighter takeoff over Midtown prompts wide interest

A long thread on Facebook reveals interest in the visit of two RCAF F18 jet fighters to Toronto this week. According to aviation journalist Tom Podolec two F18s arrived in Toronto Sunday with one taking off over Midtown Wednesday. Podolec says the planes were on what the RCAF calls “Instrument Flight Rules training”.

Man, about 40, on foot struck and hurt at Eglinton/Bayview

Police say a man in his 40s was struck and seriously injured at Bayview Ave and Eglinton Ave E. This is the location of the highly-disrupted site of the Leaside LRT stations. The call was posted Wednesday to the Toronto Police Operations Twitter account. The intersection was cleared shortly before 11.30 a.m. 680 News

City clears Lamport Park camp, NDP want “better solutions”

Police clashed with encampment fighters Wednesday leading to the arrest of several people as they cleared them from Lamport Park at 1155 King St. West. The scene above is from the Twitter video (below) from 680 News showing the battle. The removal is being decried by the NDP which says there are “much better solutions”. Tweets here do not specify just what they would prefer.

“Legacy of Dundas St” requires name change Council verdict

City Council has voted to re-name Dundas St. and all other City places and things so named. This will be done, as a Wednesday evening news release says, to confront anti-Black racism, advance truth, reconciliation and justice, as well as build a more inclusive and equitable Toronto. “The City is committed to taking steps to right wrongs, challenge systematic institutionalized racism and build a more inclusive Toronto for all, in keeping with the City’s motto Diversity our Strength. Addressing the historical legacy of Dundas Street is one of these steps, alongside the implementation of other Council-approved strategies to combat racism and discrimination.”

60 more streets in question

There does not appear to be a cost or time frame stated for this change. A committee “made up of Black and Indigenous leaders and representatives from the diverse communities living and working along Dundas Street, including Business Improvement Areas and resident associations” will advise on a new name. The ultimate outcome of this process may see Toronto very much changed from how current residents know it. There are said to be 60 more names to be studied by City staff with the prospect of a recommendation for a name change.
