A lovely day on South Bayview had many points of interest. Left, the unabashed butcher Cumbrae’s prepares to say so in signage at 1589-1591 where his stunning new business is about to open. Across the street, work proceeds inside 1588 at the new location of Boo Boo & Lefty interior design. Ron White was showing these pretty mid-heeled slippers

Court nixes Khadr visits alone with sister who likes al-Qaeda
by •
Omar Khadr will not be permitted to have unsupervised visits with his sister, Zaynab, who is said to live “in the middle east” and has voiced support for al-Qaeda. That was the decision of an Edmonton court Friday even as it loosened bail conditions for the millionaire. The judge granted Khadr greater access to the Internet as long as he stays away from anything to do with terrorism on the web. Upper left, a new trial has been ordered for Philip Grandine. He was convicted in the death of his pregnant wife Karissa Grandine, who drowned in a bathtub in 2011. The former pastor was having an affair with a parishioner. The Ontario Court of Appeal found the trial judge got befuddled by a question from the jury as to whether Grandine would be guilty if he simply knew his wife was drugged while in a hot bath. The answer opened up an avenue to conviction on terms that were never discussed at the trial. And finally, lower left, York Region school bus driver Ren “Jonathon” Zhang, 52, is in custody after allegedly chasing around after a 14-year-old girl with offers to take pictures of her.

Ban Russia, Macedonia fake news and Bette Midler tumble
by •
Seventeen anti-doping agencies including Canada and the US have called for Russia to be banned from the 2018 Olympics in South Korea. Putin’s chickens are coming home to roost. In the UK, police are trying to find the person or persons behind the water-bucket bomb on the London tube. It was very good luck that the device did not fully explode. Then, really eye-popping stuff from the Macedonian City of Veles where a huge world-wide false news industry makes people rich. It seems to be a function of clicks. More clicks on outrageous stories, more money. And finally, Bette Midler has fallen during a performance of Hello Dolly in New York when some staging apparently malfunctioned. She is believed to be okay.

Nordstrom to sell advice in store to sell fashions online
by •
According to the Washington Post, Nordstrom, Inc. has a new game-plan to boost sales: Don’t sell high-end luxury fashion items. Instead of selling clothes, shoes, accessories and other fashion products, Nordstrom is testing a concept where it will offer stylists, manicurists, a tailor and wine. Advice on what to wear will range across all of life’s challenges like dates, job interviews, vacations and so on. The payoff occurs when — and if — the customer likes the advice she/he gets and places an order at the store with Nordstrom.com. According to the Post, the first new store concept, Nordstrom Local, will open in Los Angeles next month and analysts are already thinking that the retailer will be opening many more stores in urban areas over time. Nordstrom has two stores in Toronto — CF Eaton Centre and Yorkdale.
Very cheery cyclist PEO Erin a new breed of hornet policing

It won’t surprise anyone to hear that social media has changed everything. Proof of that comes dressed in TPS blue as Parking Enforcement Officer Erin Urquhart. She pedals her way around central Toronto (and Midtown) handing out tickets with a cheery thumbs-up on Twitter at @TPS_BikeHart. Then, St. Peter’s Estonian Evangelical Lutheran Church at 817 Mount Pleasant is the highlight of visiting Estonian architectural expert Jarmo Kauge. Read his remarks in the Globe and Mail and perhaps visit the exhibit which recalls the influx of Estonian architects that gave Toronto Viljo Revel, designer of the our emblematic clamshell City Hall. Down below left, we see the Leaside AAA Major Peewee team and (right) Leaside’s Minor Mosquito AAA team. They both distinguished themselves this season. As proudly put by the guardian of ball-diamond diversions in Leaside, Eric Stickney: “We had two City championships (beating North York teams). That hasn’t happened since whenever. Competition really does drive success, and we’re lucky to have a classy organization like North York next to us.” Brian Baker has an extended account.
