LCBO to manage cannibis sales in separate chain of stores

The Ontario government will manage the sale and use of marijuana through an online service and about 150 stand-alone stores. The plan revealed Friday contains these elements.

  • Eighty stand-alone stores that will be open by July 1, 2019, with roughly 150 opened by 2020.
  • Online distribution that will be available across Ontario from July 2018 onward.
  • A proposed minimum age of 19 to use, purchase and possess recreational cannabis in Ontario.

The plan reveals that the LCBO will oversee the legal retailing of cannabis across the province through the new stand-alone stores and an online ordering service — meaning cannabis and alcohol will not be sold alongside each other.

Avro Canada CF-105 Arrow discovered on bottom of lake

Some 60 years after the Federal Government scrapped the Avro Arrow and tried to expunge it from Canadian history, an underwater search team has revealed pictures of a barnacled ghost of Canada’s great fighter aircraft. Further, the team reports there are many more broken hulks of Arrows at the bottom of Lake Ontario off Prince Edward County. The pictures show one Arrow covered in zebra mussels with its nose snapped off. Members of the Raise the Arrow expedition unveiled still photographs and underwater video from a remote-operated vehicle on Friday morning in Toronto, confirming the discovery of the free-flight model. John Burzynski, the expedition leader, brought genuinely startling news that .there are a number of aircraft in the water.

BUILT AT DOWNSVIEW

The Arrow was scrapped in 1959 because of the cost and all traces of it were erased from public view. It was built at Downsview and at one time the maker, Avro Canada, had 50,000 employees. The test model found by OEX Recovery Group was thrown into the lake off the shore of Eastern Ontario. OEX is spearheading the Raise the Arrow expedition and says in a news release it will reveal photos and video footage of the discovery Friday in Toronto. The mission to find nine models of the Avro Arrow began in late July near Point Petre in Prince Edward County. Avro Canada

Of Things Past to close on Yonge, maintain 185 Bridgeland

Of Things Past, the well-known antique and distinguished furniture consignment store, will close at 1096 Yonge Street on October 31. It appears to be the expiry of a five-year lease. A notice in the window Thursday says the store is not renewing but will continue at the larger (and no doubt less expensive) location at 185 Bridgeland near Caledonia.  Of Things Past is widely admired for the taste used in the choice of items for sale.

Prince George off to school at £18,000 a year Battersea prep

Prince George arrived for his first day at school accompanied by dad, the Duke of Cambridge. The four-year-old prince is attending Thomas Battersea preparatory school in south-west London. The annual cost is £18,000 (C$29,000). Heartbreaking contrast next as Myanmar, a dominantly Buddhist land, offers explanations for the fleeing Muslim minority Rohingya sect crossing into Bangladesh. A BBC reporter has a skeptical look. Then, a 23-year-old lifeguard who saved a five-year-old boy is now charged with endangering the boy’s life. Wow. And finally, sports radio is alive with talk of the Craig Carton charges. Here is more.

Berserk man, 26, uses truck to ram OPP cruisers on 401

A man, 26, in a stolen pickup truck smashed into two OPP cruisers as they tried to stop him on Highway 401 near Harmony Road Thursday. The perpetrator also hit a Department of Transportation sign truck with an arrow on it. PC Kerry Schmidt said that the suspect sped away from the scene before exiting the highway and entering a nearby parking lot, where he slammed into parked trucks. At that point he fled on foot but was apprehended by Durham Regional Police a short time later. One OPP officer is hospital as a result of the collision, according to Schmidt.

Irma wrecks 95% of St. Martin infrastructure say reports

Many reports from the Franco-Dutch holiday island say Irma has claimed at least eight lives in St. Martin and flattened 95 percent of the infrastructure. In total as many as 13 are said to have died. “It’s an enormous catastrophe. Ninety-five percent of the island is destroyed. I’m in shock. It’s frightening,” said Gibbs, a former French lawmaker, speaking on Radio Caribbean International. Irma is pounding other islands as a Cat 4 hurricane Thursday and is expected to roar ashore in Florida late Friday.

Hazy plan of school reform to count suspensions, expulsions

The Ontario Government will conduct a three-year study which as far as anyone can guess is intended to permit teens succeed to the most suitable career beyond high school. The plan will reportedly delve into the rates of suspension and expulsion by race among other things, although it seems likely such informaton is at hand already. There will be more “teaching material to address a variety of cultural backgrounds” and make the system more equitable and inclusive for people of all backgrounds and cultures. Canadian Press quotes the minister, Mitzi Hunter, on the moral high ground of the plan. “I strongly believe that we must continue to deepen the connections between achievement, well-being and equity,” she is quoted as saying. “These must be inextricably linked, almost like a braid, just wound together. And we must put the student experience at the centre of all that we do.” CP then concludes that “Hunter revealed few details about the plan, including potential changes to the Grade 9 curriculum.”

Thursday already as news keeps tumbling in at The Bulldog

Thursday already and Originals Ale House at 1660 Bayview wants you to remember that Saturday, September 16, 2017 marks its 34th year. They’re partying and it looks like it will be fun. Then, September heralds the sounds of Leaside Junior Wildcats hockey ringing round the Doc Pashby Play Safely Rink at Leaside Arena. Friday September 22 the Cats play their first game in Preston against the Rivulettes. The first home game is against the always tough Whitby on September 27. Below, courageous people we know include Ilana Sutherland (second from right) who will again be there in the 2017 OneWalk to Conquer Cancer and remember her fiance who died of the scourge. Her friends here are Leah Cherniak, Judy Cherniak, Samuel Sutherland, Miriam Cherniak, and Shaneal Hogaluk. Lower left, who is getting onto the catwalk at the Leaside Bridge? Police and City might ask this as pictures like this show up on Twitter and Reddit from “live social media” adventurers. Finally, UrBun Eats Co is open at 874 Eglinton East (next door to Starbucks) and is tooting this Kimchi, Angus Beef and Sriracha Mayo burger. Yow!
