The current (April 2017) issue of Carol Eby’s magazine Neighbours of Leaside and Bennington Heights profiles Jay and Mallory Carmichael. He is the Director of Business Development and Operations at Holland Bloorview Kids Hospital on Kilgour Road. Mallory is employed in pharmaceutical sales. Their journey to happy parenthood has a fairy tale twist for the 21st Century. They needed and got assistance from the Anova Fertility and Reproductive Clinic on Sheppard Ave. West. Oil blaze in Steeles wrecking yard day’s work for firefighters
by •
A nasty oil-fed fire at an isolated auto-wrecker’s yard on Steeles Ave. between Staines and Sewell’s Rds. has kept Toronto fire personnel busy Thursday. At one point there were five alarms rung in to deal with the burning waste fuel. Pumpers from Pickering, Markham and Richmond Hill also joined the battle. It was noticed about 11 a.m. The flames spread to a low-level office on the property. CN Rail was notified to stop service along a track nearby because of smoke in the area. The auto-wrecker’s yard is far away from fire hydrants so a relay pump had to be used to pump water from one hydrant to the other to reach the fire.

Longer no parking, no turn times creeping into east end
by •
That enemy of the people Mr. Congestion may be blamed for the lengthening of no parking and no turn times on the east side. As decreed at City Hall, it cannot be tolerated. Thus we will see an extension of the program stretching prohibitions (see release) to 3.30 to 6 and in some places 3.30 to 6.30. On Bayview Ave and Mt. Pleasant Rd. the 4 to 6 standard remains but merchants and residents should be on guard. This is especially true of those who value the local shopping. For many shops, business drops dead at 4 p.m. Those who are congested in South Bayview are those passing through. City Toronto

A US citizen identified as Joseph Galaska, 58, is in custody after authorities at Pearson Airport found a device that looked like a bomb but wasn’t. Galaska has been charged with mischief in connection with the “mock improvised explosive device” found during the inspection of a traveller’s suitcase Thursday. The incident delayed United Airlines flight 547 to Chicago for five hours and ultimately led to the aircraft returning empty to its origin. Passengers were re-booked aboard other flights.
Prom invitation inscribed on field outside Leaside High
by •
Many wished the sender of this invitation good luck but it was Eric Papalambropouloges who posted “She said no” on Leaside Community Facebook Group. We’re not sure if that’s right. Ryan Yee said he was glad that everyone liked the idea. Either way guys, don’t forget the spoken word is quite effective too.
