And the vice chairman of Samsung is caught up in the influence-peddling scandal that has brought down the president of South Korea. His loss will no doubt not be as serious to his employer as the exploding Note 7. Lastly, the visit of the president of Taiwan to San Francisco recalls the shabby treatment that this brave democracy has received from the world. China says it’s just another part of China  and has wrung a concession on that point from the United Nations and most of the world. But Taiwan is a model of civil order and prosperity that has put Beijing to shame with its freedom for decades.

Some Saturday street scenes in and near South Bayview

On Balliol St. traffic was blocked on the west side at Mt. Pleasant as a sky crane lifted replacement elevator parts to the mechanical room atop the roof of a Davisville Ave. apartment. Upper right we see the arrows of Eglinton Ave E. These flashing right, left, right pointers near Forman Ave. signal the serpentine route required to keep from falling into an LRT excavation. Lower right is a freshly out-shopped TTC bus in the new livery. This paint job deletes the 45 degree angle in the belt-line and colours the top of the bus red, it seems. But will it, as one wag wondered, make it arrive on time?
