Starbucks plans expansion to double number of stores

Starbucks has announced a five-year growth program that will see it double the number of locations from the present 12,000 worldwide to about 24,000. It is a kind of farewell challenge to the firm from retiring Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz. The Starbucks reputation for coffee continues to be a strong one. But the company has been under intense pressure in the U.S. from Dunkin Donuts and McDonald’s and in Canada from Tim Hortons. All these coffee houses have out-flanked Starbucks where it is weakest — in the food department. They all sell a greater variety of items. In Canada, Tim Hortons owns a lunch business that in other circumstances might well belong to Starbucks. Tim’s has been aggressive in growing its outlets too. Sometimes they aren’t too big — like the locations in the Couche Tard-owned On-The-Run stores at Esso stations — but they are usually very busy. A large question mark over the Starbucks expansion is whether it will seek drive-through stores like Tim’s. Or will it aim for more “in-store” locations, another Tim’s favorite.

Always something unique going on in Grade 1 at CGS

Unique teaching ideas in Grade 1 (more photos in gallery below)

There is always something unique going on in the Grade 1 classroom at CGS. To reinforce sight word spelling, Kara Greenwood, Grade 1 teacher at Children’s Garden School (on Eglinton) had her students ‘build’ their sight words this week: friend, there & any, out of different materials. This hands on activity was very engaging for the students and made learning to spell new words fun.

Looking around the Grade 1 classroom at CGS you will also see a wall of paperclip chains, or ‘Book Chains’, as the students call them. For every book that students read outside of school, they earn a ‘book clip’ for their chain. This creative initiative fosters a love of reading for the children, especially for those not as interested in reading on their own.

Grade 1 is a year full of possibility. If you are interested in finding out what Grade 1 at CGS would look like for your child, contact Kelly Scott, Director of Admission, at 416-423-5017 x 43 or visit cgsschool.com to book your private tour today.

Dollarama Inc. sees nice Q3 profit increase of 10 percent

Sherwood Park family paid $10,000 to save son’s vision

CBC is recounting Wednesday how the Sherwood Park family of Thomas Wellsman paid $10,000 for a medical procedure to avoid blindness for son Aiden, 16, because Ontario does not cover it. The condition is keratoconus, a degenerative eye disease that causes the cornea to thin and change shape. When he was diagnosed in late October, doctors in Toronto told Aidan and his family it would lead to blindness if left untreated. although no time period is specified in the story. There is much distress and anger about the case because the procedure is covered in full by five Canadian jurisdictions — Yukon, B.C., Alberta, Saskatchewan, Quebec and New Brunswick. It is not covered in NWT, Ontario, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland. The story makes much of the Ontario government’s apparent delay in deciding what to do about paying for keratoconus treatment. Doctors comment that there is politics involved. No doubt. The provincial debt is more than $300,000 billion dollars, not something one wishes to think about when one deals with the eyesight of people.  CBC
