World may never see the like of Jim’s huge breakfast again

Saddened patrons of Jim’s Restaurant are mourning the closing of the popular all-day breakfast joint at 897 Queen St. E Sunday and wonder if they will ever again see the enormous “hungry-man” breakfasts and huge sandwiches they loved so much. The place is part of a parcel of land that will become a condominium. Jim’s has been feeding the Leslieville crowd and a lot of outsiders too under three owners for 50 years. The heroic breakfast of three eggs, three slices of bacon, three sausages, a slice of peameal, toast and tea or coffee is legendary. The sandwiches featured Westerns (The Best Westerns) and bacon sandwiches that were like eating pork chops on bread. Many retailers will admire the cash-only business model, something that’s only justifiable with a large and loyal customer base.

Twitter account @Leaside660 fights Sunnybrook towers

A recently created Twitter account @Leaside660 is dedicated to defeating the proposed towers at the RioCan owned Sunnybrook Plaza. At recent negotiations with the OMB it was agreed that the Leaside Property Owner’s Association will be granted Party status along with RioCan and the City of Toronto. The Chair refused to allow a request from RioCan and the City for mediation, which was emailed to the Chairman the day before hearing, because the Board procedures for establishing mediation had not been followed. Leaside660 says on its site, “from our perspective this was a relief as this might have occurred without the LPOA and residents being part of the discussion. Now that the LPOA is a Party, in future we will be part of whatever goes on.” It is also noted that Leaside660 must engage a lawyer. Readers may recall the perilous position of ratepayers if the city decides to settle with RioCan allowing towers that insult the neighborhood. Is Larry Takahashi still a serial rapist at the age of 63?

Larry Takahashi has been in prison for more than 30 years for raping an unknown number of women in and around BC’s lower mainland. Estimates of the number of victims range up to 100. Now he is to be granted day parole wearing an ankle monitor. The question echoing around the community is whether that is just a stupid thing to do. Is Larry Takahashi still dangerous at the age of 63? Some of his victims say it seems very likely that he is. Erica Hammermeister says she is still fearful of Takahashi. Fingerprint evidence in her home finally convicted the serial rapist. She thinks he should have been declared a dangerous offender.

City expresses its intention to build the Davisville Hub

City Council has voted 31 to four with nine abstentions to proceed with a community centre widely known as the Davisville Hub. It will be built as hoped by the residents who have supported it on the property of the old Davisville Public School at 43 Millwood Road. The mid-July motion contains details of how the hub will be accommodated on the site and the cost to taxpayers. Some six million dollars over two years of Section 37 and 45 monies will be granted (given) to the school board to design a three-story replacement for DPS. This will permit space on the slightly less than one acre parcel of land between Millwood and Davisville Ave to build the hub complete with an “aquatic facility”. This presumably is a swimming pool and/or splash pad although there is no mention of either by name.  It remains to be established how the hub itself is paid for. Council asks staff to produce a budget. The ubiquitous Section 37 money is a mixed blessing. It is a handy source of extra dollars for such good work but in the end it is just City taxes not manna from heaven. It comes from developers and most people will see the connection between this handy cash and the tendency by Toronto to permit builders to go big with their projects. The vote was overwhelming in its support with notable “No” votes from John Filion, Mary Fragedakis and Jaye Robinson. The division is included with the motion  Midtown hub  The hub has been strongly supported by Josh Matlow (Ward 22) and Trustee Shelley Laskin.
