Moore Ave. sewers “blow their stack” to get clean

Here we are on Moore Ave at Brendan Road where Clean Water Works of Ottawa is installing sewer life-extending cured-in-place-pipe lining (CIPP). Steam is used to cure a resin-saturated felt tube or robust sleeve composed of polyester that is pulled into aging and damaged sewer pipes. CIPP lining tube is inserted into the damaged pipe with either air pressure or water pressure. Hot water or steam is used to cure the resin which then forms a solid, impregnable mass that lines the interior dimensions of a sewer pipe. That’s the part you are looking at in the video above. Living is learning.

Safety presenter Valerie Wood talks distracted driving

Staff and students of CGS, 670 Eglinton Ave. E., felt privileged to be visited by Leaside resident Jillian Walsh, mother of Georgia Walsh, at the end of the school year. Jillian has teamed up with dynamic presenter, Valerie Wood, to bring road safety education to children. The presentation was incredibly effective and captivated students from start to finish. The overall message of the presentation was one of empowerment for children. They are encouraged to know the rules and remind grown ups who are seen making unsafe choices. Distracted driving was the main focus but Valerie also talked about jay walking, running out from behind parked cars and correct helmet use. That was followed by a 15-minute Jump. CGS students gathered pledges for the Jump and raised $4,364 in just a few short weeks to contribute to the playground rejuvenation fund for Traces Manes Park. The new park that will be named for Georgia. The Jump for Georgia team has been busy locally at other schools, spreading the message of road, bike and pedestrian safety with almost 2,000 kids. Thanks to Georgia’s mom, Jillian, for bringing this life saving information to children in Leaside and beyond. Donate here to the Trace Manes Park Rejuvenation Project.

Rapper tries to copyright “Leafs” — but is it a word?

Snoop Dogg is trying to copyright the name Leafs by Snoop to market marijuana. The Maple Leafs, through the giant multi-amusement firm, has objected. There is no information on just what MLSE is saying in its intervention, but the hockey guys might have the English language on their side. Common modern usage of the word Leaf originated as a short form for the  Toronto Maple Leafs — not leaves, the only plural of the word “leaf” known to English. And it has been that way for a while now.  As first reported by Rick Westhead at TSN, Snoop Dogg, whose real name is Cordozar Calvin Broadus, Jr., filed an application with the United States Patent and Trademark Office on Nov. 17 to sell and market a series of marijuana-related products adorned with a seven-pointed gold leaf and Leafs by Snoop emblazoned over them. CBC points out that the most common types of marijuana leaves often has seven points. The Toronto Maple Leafs hockey club logo, meanwhile, is a maple leaf with 31 points — a nod to the year Maple Leaf Gardens opened, in 1931.

Barney rescue and why these girls are in fire hats

Alabama teenager Darby Risner was trying to pull a prank by wearing the big purple dinosaur costume when the massive mask got stuck on her head and shoulders. Her friends tried to help her out. But it failed. Naturally they took video and laughed at Darby. When the group was unsuccessful in helping to free her, they had to go with her to the fire station where firefighters removed the Barney mask. It took 45 minutes. For their troubles, the girls were all gifted with faux fire hats by the smoke eaters. That’s a glum looking Darby second from the left.
