A drone hobbyist, Bruno Kataoka, has captured scenes of a pod of false killer whales chasing a shark, tiring it out and then going in for the kill. Kataoka has filmed what experts believe to be four false killer whales, members of the dolphin family, expertly hunting the shark off Cronulla beach south of Sydney. The dolphins, which grow between three and five metres long, were hunting a juvenile shark in a life and death battle. After a desperate chase the leader of the pod can be seen attacking the shark, and dragging it down.

Police will conduct a Helmets on Kids campaign today (Saturday, May 14, 2016) at East York Town Centre on Overlea Boulevard. The Saturday weather will be wet but the rain is expected to slacken off a bit in the afternoon. We may see the sun break through later in the day. It is cooler than normal and Saturday overnight might see just three degrees Celsius. Brave marchers trekked to Rosedale Park on Schofield Ave. from their marshalling point in Moore Park at Welland and Moore Aves. it was a parade of umbrellas. 17-year-old youth has died in Brampton following a parking lot shooting Friday night about 9 p.m.  It happened outside a bar on Lisa Street near Dixie Road and Queen Street in Brampton.

U.S. Air Force Gen. Lori Robinson became the military’s first female combatant commander as she assumed responsibility for U.S. Northern Command and North American Aerospace Defense in a ceremony Friday in Colorado. Robinson replaced outgoing Adm. William Gortney to lead the two commands. North American Aerospace Defense, or NORAD, is a joint U.S.-Canada operation tasked with detecting and tracking potential missile threats. U.S. Northern Command is responsible for the defense of the continental United States, but its area of operation also includes Mexico, Canada, the Gulf of Mexico and parts of the Caribbean.

Andy Elder, owner of the well-known Grilltime meat shop and catering service, is seen with Dayna Bleeman, Director, Corporate and Community Partnerships at the Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital on Kilgour Road. He delivered a cheque for $1,000. It is as much the donation of the many customers who purchased racks of Andy’s barbecued ribs during a promotion this Spring. Part of each purchase went to Holland Bloorview.

Despite efforts by the government, police and media to slow down the con men operating the Canada Revenue Agency fraud, these scam bullies are keeping up a fierce pace of phone calls in South Bayview. One resident of Moore Park tells of two calls in two days. It’s not known if the fraud attempts were by the same outfit. One call featured a live voice of a man saying he was from some sort of CRA enforcement arm and that a payment was needed immediately. From the sound in the background, he  was clearly operating out of a so-called boiler room where many such persons are making calls. The other call was from a recorded voice saying an arrest warrant had been issued. To the reasonably educated listener these calls are clearly fake. Interestingly, as well, the scam bullies frequently sound like public school dropouts. It sort of makes sense.

The Friday half of the Leaside United Church Awesome Sale is underway until 7 p.m. Here we see the lineup which always forms in order to get into this wonderful offering of furniture and household articles. This year the Awesome Sale had so many things it had to sell off some early. The sale continues tomorrow between 9 and noon. Leaside United Church is at the corner of Millwood Rd. and McRae Drive.

A man has fallen from a roof in an industrial accident at Broadway and Redpath Aves. and is said to be in critical condition. Police said the fall was considerable, maybe three storeys. Just after 9 a.m., police responded to an apartment building at the corner. Paramedics said the 28-year-old man was semi-conscious and breathing when they arrived. The Ministry of Labour has been notified of the incident and will conduct an investigation. Twitter

The Gardiner Expressway will be closed in both directions this weekend for spring maintenance. It shuts down at 11 p.m. on Friday and re-opens Monday at 5 a.m. Of course, we can expect to see all that traffic on other streets this weekend.
