A female jewel thief working with another woman put a gun to the head of an 11-year-old child during a robbery and pulled the trigger several times. No one knows why the gun did not fire. The terrified daughter of the store owner escaped injury except for the awful memory of the incident. Earlier in the stick up, the gun was fired at the owner — and it blew a hole in a door. He was unhurt. The crime unfolded last summer at Asia Gold 1510 Steeles Ave West in Vaughan. The violent encounter netted the thieves little. York Region are Police are to get attention on the case. So Mr and Mrs. South Bayview, how does a wall battery that stores power from any source — the grid or solar — sound to you? This concept has been given new interest by Tesla Energy, an off-shoot of the car company. It is designed to “smooth out” the ups and down of power flow and particularly to give you power when the wires go down. That’s what Hydro One calls going off grid. The Tesla concept raises again the enormously sensible idea of homes that are semi-independent of Big Hydro. Imagine the peace of mind and sheer convenience during something like the ice storm of 2013? So much more sensible than ugly windmills marching across Southwestern Ontario.
New City Manager Wallace appears to have a sharp tongue

Peter Wallace is slated to become the City of Toronto’s new manager. He will replace Joe Pennachetti who has retired. Mr.Wallace is a former secretary of the cabinet of the provincial cabinet. He reportedly was able to speak to the police about plans by some to erase the contents of computers in the Premier’s office following exposure of the Hydro plants scandal. Mr. Wallace retired as head of the Ontario bureaucracy last year after more than 30 years working for the province. Since then, according to the Globe and Mail, he has been a visiting fellow with the University of Toronto’s School of Public Policy and Governance. While serving as Ontario’s top bureaucrat, Mr. Wallace repeatedly warned the Liberal government its plan for balancing the budget would require significant program cuts. He has been quoted as saying that the government’s debt reduction targets were so ambitious “it’s not even funny. … More directly, this is more gravy than [Toronto mayor Rob] Ford even promised to look for.”

The Lit Espresso Bar is now open at 1517 Bayview Ave. Got to get in there and try some Pig Iron Coffee. The slow start at the new branch of Never Grow Up seems to be over at the former Newsome Photography premises at 1725. Even though the outside still looks like last winter there are carpenters inside putting in shelves for the children’s wear. This is progress. Never Grow Up is a relatively recent company with its first location in Oakville. Down at the former TD Bank location at 1591 (hands up those who remember) it appears the place has been sold, along with the little satellite store which housed Flight Centre for so long. We only say this because the signs are down and there is cleaning going on.

The intensification of South Bayview goes ahead with varying bursts of resistance by residents. One such defense is being sustained in Moore Park on Glenrose Ave around the now crumbling two-and-a-half storey brick home at 139. It is a lovely property despite the condition of the house, There is a mature Oak on the front lawn and the lot stretches 50 by 139 on a slight slope down to the backyards of the homes on Inglewood Drive. But the house is empty now and has been for two years. There is no approval to subdivide and put up two homes on two 25-foot lots. It sold in 2013 for $1,860,000 about $90,000 below listing.
Moore Park’s Terry Fallis wins 2nd Leacock humour prize

The celebrated humorist and Moore Park resident Terry Fallis has won the 2015 Stephen Leacock Medal for Humour for his book No Relation. It chronicles the dilemma of a man who is burdened with the name Ernest Hemingway. This is the fourth time Fallis was nominated for the award. He won it in 2008 for The Best Laid Plans and was shortlisted in 2011 for The High Road and again in 2013 for Up and Down. The prize is a medal and $15,000 in cash from the TD Financial Group. Mr. Fallis, of Welland Ave., told the Toronto Star that it felt just as good to win a second time as the first. The writer is said to have another book in the works for Fall release.

Mellow Brady could pass for South Bayview Bulldog

Brady is young guy who caused the Bulldog to do a double take outside Alex Cheese. A bit like looking in the mirror. His owner says that like the South Bayview guy Brady is a pretty mellow dog. He had lots of hilarious faces in just a minute but we think that’s the real Brady lower right.
Camaro production will end November 20 at GM Oshawa

General Motors has now given a date for the last day of production of the Camaro at the Oshawa plant. It is November. 20, 2015 and as previously announced, will cause the loss of 1,000 jobs.
