Leaside United Church (LUC) will hold an Outreach Fair Sunday, March 8, 2015 to support its many programs. LUC is a patron of such excellent services as the Flemingdon Food Bank, the Lake Scugog Camp and the El Hogar orphanage in Honduras. Bill Meeker, co-chair of the church outreach committee says there will be about ten organizations represented with booths in the church gymnasium. Everyone should come by and find something they need. It begins at 11.45 at Leaside United, 822 Millwood Rd. at McRae Drive.
Toronto Water repairs Sutherland, Parkhurst main

Toronto Water has restored service to residents of both Parkhurst Blvd and Sutherland Drive after the weekend water main break at the corner of the two streets. The trouble started overnight Sunday when an original main broke under collapsing concrete and earth on the southwest corner of the two streets.
York Taps is now open in the Sunnybrook Plaza

Toronto police have declared the death of a 63-year-old man on Thomas Elgie Drive to be death by misadventure. The man bled to death when a knife he had just purchased cut an artery in his leg when he slipped and fell on ice. Previous post.
Twitter re-directing Leaside search to Seaside

Twitter has begun re-directing searches for references to Leaside to Seaside instead. There is a subhead link which politely asks if you are really interested in Leaside. This question suggests that you’ve made a mistake, even though you haven’t. Such fun. In fact, if you scroll down the entries you will soon come upon genuine Leaside tweets. It appears that this annoying manipulation of the search is an advertising ploy. The Seaside results begin with a colourful invitation to enter a contest for a Seaside vacation. But the linked page is the main pitch for “Daily Prizes”, a site that invites you to sign up for all sorts of contests. You know what that means. Who knows how this name game is playing out elsewhere. Are people searching Davisville being diverted to Margaritaville? The hugely popular social networking site is somewhat notorious for not making money, despite an IPO in 2013 that netted its founders billions. It recorded a $511 million loss 2014.

128 Airdrie Rd. has sold for $975,000 in an October best-offer style of sale. This was not an invitation to bargain hunters. The owner said he would assess all the offers on a given date and he had 20 to choose from at that time. 128 Airdrie was listed for $950,000. The pleasant original home was carefully maintained but not updated. It may be demolished according to the Globe and Mail. It sold in eight days.

Laugh Out Loud in Leaside tonight at Wm. Lea

The sixth annual Laugh Out Loud in Leaside (LOL) takes place this evening in the William Lea Rom at Leaside Arena. It begins at 7 p.m. and is in aid of Moorelands After-School programs which has helped children from less fortunate surroundings for more than a century. The mainspring of the Laugh Out Loud tradition is Leaside realtor Charlene Kalia. She issued a statement in a position as chair of LOL in Leaside: “Thousands of children and families who use the second ice pad at Leaside Arena, new immigrant families in need of clothing and support and now children in under served communities in Toronto have already or will benefit from a community’s generosity.” In the last five years, LOL in Leaside raised a total of $150,000 to support a second ice rink at Leaside Memorial Gardens. All funds raised this year will be directed to Mooreland’s various programs. We are honoured to be supported by our neighbours in Leaside,” said Maureen Lewish, director, development and communications at Moorelands. “Over 73 per cent of our families live on less than $24,000 a year in this city, so our focus is to bridge the opportunity gap for children and youth by offering creative, supportive and fun out-of-school programs to help these kids develop the character, skills and strategies they need to thrive.”
