Sunnybrook has patient in isolation checking for Ebola

Sunnybrook hospital has announced it has a patient under investigation for Ebola. Sunnybrook says the patient is isolated in its facility for such work. The patient was admitted today (Wednesday, March 18, 2015) with fever and nausea and had recently travelled to West Africa. “The patient is currently being assessed in a negative pressure room by a small team of our most qualified staff,” the statement said. Sunnybrook is one of several hospitals designated by the province to take responsibility for treating Ebola and Ebola-symptom cases when they appear.

Tractor trailer tangle a terrifying sight for any 401 driver

Highway 401 near Trenton continues to be closed Wednesday as police and highways officials begin to haul away the enormous pile of wrecked vehicles. There is said to be an  “emergency response plan” in effect apparently because of some of the cargo. OPP say the crashes involve between 30 to 40 tractor-trailers, as well as other vehicles. The photo tweeted by Simon Ostler, assignment editor of CTV News, is quite breathtaking. He draws the attention of readers to the tractor trailer that went zooming off into the woods.  The OPP confirms that all eastbound lanes of the 401 are closed along a 30-kilometre stretch of the highway from Brighton to west of Belleville. All but one westbound lane is closed as well. Officials with the Ministry of Environment are on scene for a leak of some kind. Reports from the scene indicate one of the tractor-trailers was carrying more than 40,000 litres of oil. Police said the crashes caused by whiteouts just after midnight. Four people were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries

Microsoft will phase out Explorer to create new browser

Microsoft has announced that Internet Explorer, its long-time and once-dominant-web browser is to be phased out and replaced by a new browser. Explorer is nearly 20 years old and was born out of the sudden realization at Microsoft that it had almost “missed the Internet.”  At the time, the computer revolution was about the PC,  not the Internet. Then a 23-year-old wizard named Marc Andreessen created Netscape, the first Internet browser. It’s popularity is said to have stunned Microsoft. Netscape was set to conquer the world until Microsoft made use of Explorer mandatory by embedding it in Windows. Now Explorer is on its way out and Microsoft will try to regain browser preeminence with a new web interface under the  working name Project Spartan.

Rahier particpating in Macaron Day, Friday March 20

Rahier at 1586 Bayview Ave. will be participating with many other patisseries around town in Macaron Day this Friday, March 20, 2015. The annual charitable giveaway is in aid of the Red Door Shelter in Leslieville. Macarons are a butter-cream or ganache filled meringue cookie. Typically, participating bakeries donate a macaron in exchange for the sale of others. Twenty-five per cent of the proceeds from all additional macarons purchased on this day is donated to the Red Door. Nice idea.

Steering turns to garbage as truck loses axle on Allen

As reported by CP24 the driver of this garbage truck lost control of his rubbish carrier north of Eglinton Ave. W. when the rear-most axle was disconnected in some fashion. You can see the strange alignment of the two rear axles in the inset photo lower left. The expressway is closed northbound between Eglinton and :Lawrence. The driver fortunately was not hurt as his big vehicle started to wobble all over the place. Must have been quite a ride. Go safely buddy.

Lawrence Park CI girls win bronze at Ontario bonspiel

The Lawrence Park Collegiate Institute Panthers have won the bronze medal in girls’ curling at a bonspiel near Belleville over the weekend. The LPCI girls finished up 9 – 4 over the Parry Sound High School Panthers to take the prize. They were playing in a province wide competition hosted by local curling clubs at the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) bonspiel.

East York man applied online to carry Pan Am Torch

East York’s Michael Crawford, 51, is chosen one of the Pan Am Games torch bearers

East York runner and family man Michael Crawford, 51, will be among the bearers of the  Pan Am Torch. That symbolic flame was unveiled yesterday at the Ontario Science Centre. Mr Crawford will participate in carrying the torch across the country.  About 3,000 such bearers will each cover a 200-metre segment during the 41-day torch relay. Mr. Crawford was selected as a torch bearer after he applied online and wrote in his submission about how important sports is to him. He said the mentality of sports about having the will to win helped him overcome an illness he experienced six years ago. His children are also active with his 12-year-old daughter a keen snowboarder. A 14-year-old son recently won a medal in a national snowboarding competition in Quebec.“Sports is a very important thing in our family,” said Crawford. He said he was honoured to be chosen to run in the torch relay. Triathlete Simon Whitfield, who won medals in both the Olympic and Pan Am Games, will also be one of the torchbearers. He participated in the Vancouver Olympic Games. Officials at the ceremony were: Toronto Mayor John Tory, Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne, and TO2015 Board Chair David Peterson
