Interpol has issued a sharply-worded criticism of the sloppy way passports are checked at national passport control points. It said no country checked its database that held information about two stolen passports that were used to board an ill-fated Malaysia Airlines flight with 239 people on board. Interpol said it had information available about an Austrian passport stolen in 2012 and an Italian passport stolen in 2013 which were stolen in Thailand.
Stay Calm and Spring Forward is our advice
by •
We like the variation on that stolid British advice about carrying on: Stay Calm and Spring Forward is The Bulldog’s recommendation. In fact, most of us learned Spring Forward and Fall Backwards in school. Yet it apparently isn’t fully understood in the Mayor’s office where someone tweeted that we should remember to Fall Back. A correction was made 23 minutes later. The really good news is that the 7 a.m. Canada-Sweden hockey game occurred in Standard Time. Think about that. And there are very few churches where you cannot arrive a little late. It’s the thought that counts.
Ice blasting on the Rideau a certain sign of Spring
by •
There are signs of Spring and you have seen them, Sunday morning’s cold weather not withstanding. time to say goodbye the bitterness of this bitter winter. No more “The groundhog called for six weeks more winter so I ate him” stuff. It”s over. One of the most entertaining omens is the annual ice blasting on the Rideau River in Ottawa. The rumbling noise of the work is a near century old project in the capital. Explosions were heard and felt around parts of the Rideau River Saturday. There’s close to 1,000 structures on the Rideau watershed that have the potential of flooding every year. Here in South Bayview, the Weather Channel’s Daniel Martins says it’s a testament to how harsh the winter has been in southern Ontario that a brief return to seasonal temperatures can feel so warm. Still, that’s how many residents were feeling Sunday as above-zero temperatures were widespread, and more of the same expected Saturday and a slight cool down on the way for Sunday How right you are Daniel.Woman dead inside St. Dennis Dr. apartment

Bagel House Express on Eglinton now open
by •
Jessie Sahdra has opened his new Bagel House Express on Eglinton Ave. W near the corner of Castle Knock Rd. It’s right beside the Starbucks. Today (Saturday, March 8, 2014) he was in high spirits as customers flocked in to order his delicious Montreal-style bagels, long a favourite of the residents of South Bayview. Jessie posed with a Bagel House employee Shawn Shahzad (left and right inset). Shawn is also well known to South Bayview customers. The new shop receives deliveries of fresh bagels from the South Bayview ovens. It is an economical and well-located business addition for the company. Bagel House has three locations already in Toronto — 1548 South Bayview Ave., 1722 Avenue Road and 1438 Yonge Street. There is also one in Mississaugua. The firm began in 1999 when Jessie migrated from a Montreal bagel bakery where he learned the craft. We don’t know whether its the simple ingredients, the hand rolling, boiling in honey water or the wood-oven baking. Together however, the Montreal Bagel is a national treasure.Yonge landlord must pay for tenants hotel stay
by •
A Landlord and Tenant Board adjudicator has ordered a Lawrence Park area landlord to pay for the hotel accommodation of her tenants until heat and hot water can be restored. Information from the tenants counsel Lisa Feinberg of the firm Weir Foulds LLP is that they have been without these requirements of life since February 11, 2014. The landlord, Bianca Pollock, told the hearing that she had been unable to get the work done despite repeated requests for service from contractors. Her building is at 2779 Yonge Street at Strathgowan Ave. During the hearing, the landlord took a call from a contractor identified as David Eastwood of Arrow Heating and Air Conditioning. The issue seems to have been money and maybe prepayment because Ms. Pollock is said to have agreed to certain payments while on the phone. Later she told adjudicator Joseph Bercovitz that work will begin as early as Tuesday, March 11, 2014 and take a week to complete. Ms Pollock is required to pay for the tenants accommodation at the hotel until heat and hot water are restored.

Talk in a number of South Bayview shops over the weekend was about the leasing of the space at 1617 Bayview Ave, the premises formerly occupied by Yeh Yogurt. The space will go to a retailer of meat and poultry produced by organic standards. Beginning Thursday evening, the South Bayview Bulldog has made three inquiries to Rowe Farms Meats about this location. Two e-mails were sent and one telephone call made. The phone call was answered by information that any response will come from the Chief Executive Officer and that possibly by the middle of next week he will have something to say. Rowe Farms Meats has a number of shops in Toronto and one in Guelph. Website
