Rally planned to protest Broadway & Roehampton shelters

Volunteers have hand delivered flyers in recent days outlining the plans for a rally on Saturday, August 15th, 2020 between 10am – 4pm in front of Northern Secondary School. Identified as the Mt. Pleasant/Eglinton Community Group, they hope to restore safety to the area following the opening of two emergency homeless residences in the area. The City of Toronto have moved homeless Torontonians into 808 Mt. Pleasant Road and 55-65 Broadway Avenue in an attempt to curb the spread of Covid-19 in the homeless community. More

The rally has become a controversial issue among residents of the neighbourhood. There seems to be honest concern for the safety of neighbours, shelter staff and its residents, but the method for addressing the issues has created some tensions. Councillor Josh Matlow tweeted, “To those who’ve asked about these flyers- I strongly disagree with holding this rally in the midst of health, housing & opioid crises. It won’t improve safety or reflect well on our community. Let’s not succumb to fear. Let’s be kind & remain focused on addressing our challenges.”

Patrons enjoyed the brunch menu on their patio this weekend. On Bayview since 1983, we’re happy to see their doors open again. And finally, the dark hoarding has been removed from Havana Castle Cigars, revealing, you guessed it — a castle. Very clever. They’re opening soon at 1563 Bayview Ave (formerly Carreira Casuals).
