Celebrate the Town of Leaside’s 110th anniversary in May!

May 7, 2023 will mark the 110th anniversary of the incorporation of the Town of Leaside.

Leaside is one of Canada’s few truly planned communities, spearheaded by the Canadian Northern Railway (CNR) and originally designed by landscape architect Frederick Gage Todd using the principles of the Garden City. As our city and community continue to grow, it remains important to recognize and celebrate our “wonderful community within a city” that we are privileged to be a part of.

With the support of Leaside Life’s Geoff Kettel and a number of community organizations and advocates, a number of events have been created to celebrate the 110 milestone. Most events will take place in the month of May, including:

  • May 4-6: An archival exhibit at the Leaside Library
The exhibit features historical and archival displays highlighting key aspects of Leaside’s evolution and history – such as Early Housing, the Thorncliffe Development and Racetrack, the Leaside Aerodrome, Police and Fire Protection, and Industry and Railways. A centrepiece of the exhibit will be a large map, designed by local historian and cartographer John Naulls, which details Leaside’s growth as a community from 1913-1934. The exhibit also features pop-up exhibits from several established community organizations — including Leaside Memorial Community Gardens, Leaside High School Alumni Society and the Leaside Heritage Preservation Society. “It’s so for people to be aware of Leaside’s role as one of Toronto’s most significant and historic communities,” says Geoff Kettel, an organizer of Leaside 110. “Leaside has a unique cultural heritage that is worth remembering and preserving. Events like this help ensure that it continues to thrive as a successful and livable community.”
  • May 19: A partnership event with Thorncliffe Park

CGS: Spring Is in The Air!

A spring update from Children’s Garden School

Winter is ending and Spring is here! Flowers are starting to bloom, birds are beginning to sing, and beauty is alive in nature again! This time of year is perfect to go for hikes or lay in the sun or just perfect for being outside. As much as we would love to spend all of these sunshine filled day outside, we do have to keep our learning inside going. What better way to bring the outdoors in, than with art!

Our school has definitely dusted off those pastels and bright spring palettes that were in hibernation over the winter, to transform our classrooms and hallways to life! Spring, a season when the world seems to come back to life, is actually a perfect time to naturally shift into a new subject. A lot of our students from grade 1-4 are working through linear and pattern aesthetics, while a lot of our younger students have been focusing on seasonal association, shapes and colours!

Please enjoy some of our resident “Jr Van Gogh’s” art pieces!

CGS: Terry Fox Update: Top 10 Again!

A news update courtesy of Children’s Garden School

We have received such wonderful news from the Terry Fox Foundation. We have once again ranked in the Top 10 of Ontario’s elementary schools “Top 50 Terry Fox School Run Fundraisers of 2022”. Ranking in 7th place with a grand total of $22,000 raised, our school community has shown such extraordinary effort in carrying on Terry’s legacy.

We are so honoured to have made such a big impact amongst some of the biggest schools who took part. We are small but mighty! As we believe “we can do hard things”, we are beyond proud that our CGS community worked hard and diligently together to help the foundations advancements in cancer cure research.

Thank you again to all those who contributed to our school’s collective donation to the 2022 Terry Fox Run Fundraiser!

Leaside Garden Society – Speaker Series presents:
Peonies and Friends: The Stars of the June Garden
Speaker: Ingrid Janssen
Date: Thursday April 13th, 2023
Time & Place: 7pm on Zoom

Ingrid Janssen, is a horticulturist, speaker, blogger and Master Gardener. She has been gardening for most of her life and is a passionate, some would say “crazy” gardener. How else to describe someone who plants bulbs in January despite 15cm. of snow! She has appeared on Rogers TV Durham and has spoken at Canada Blooms many times. Ingrid is a recent peony enthusiast with a special interest in Canadian bred peonies and the peony hybrids of Professor A.P. Saunders. Her collection has grown from 1 to over 130 peonies in the last 6 years. Ingrid received her Horticulturist Diploma from the University of Guelph and is an active member of several horticultural and plant societies including the Canadian and American Peony societies. She volunteers on many garden projects in her community the most notable being the restoration of the perennial borders at the Parkwood National Historic Site in Oshawa.

Peonies are beloved for their gorgeous blooms and captivating fragrance. They are adaptable, easy to grow plants that fit into any garden style. Along with many plant companions, they are the stars of the June garden. Ingrid will talk about the different types of peonies you can grow, how you can achieve 6 weeks of peony blooms in your garden and the wonderful plant friends that bloom alongside them.

Ramona’s Kitchen (1608 Bayview Ave) continues to make progress with the installment of their playful neon sign plus gigantic spatulas, whisk & tongs.

Around the neighbourhood

The WORKS Craft Burger & Beer will be taking over the space next to the Beer Store and Metro up at Bayview and Eglinton. Formerly home to TOSTO Quickfire Pizza Pasta, the official address is 609 Roehampton Ave. Olive Oil Emporium has opened at 608 Mount Pleasant Road. L’amour Cafe & Pastry is holding a grand opening event on Apr 1st 2023, between 11am – 2pm at 927 Mt Pleasant Rd (north of Broadway). And finally, the cookie delivery company Midnight Cookie has recently opened a bricks & mortar location at 3 Manor Rd East.

Spring breaking through despite dreary March weather

While the weather outside might feel frightful, the early spring flowers are not deterred. Spotted today on Millwood Road, a lovely cluster of crocuses that appear to be waiting for the right moment to bloom. It’s always a treat to see that first burst of colour in our gardens.
