Mayor Tory and City officials held a news conference Monday to prepare people for the  summer of 2019 road and watermain construction season, one which his honour said will be the busiest ever. Some $500 million will be spent on rehabilitating and improving transportation infrastructure while another $480 million will be invested in water infrastructure including. For many it will recall the summer of 2017 when sidewalk reconstruction through southwest Leaside and the re-making of the corner of Laird Dr. and Millwood Rd. pretty much paralyzed the neighborhood. Former Councillor Burnside said at the time that a further project to tighten up the wide intersection at Southvale Dr. and Millwood had been put over to the summer of 2019. The cold, wet weather of Monday and Tuesday are forecast to give way to much warmer days as we head into the Victoria Day weekend. The fireworks guy, Dave Bryant, is asking all those who are likely to turn out on Monday for his show at the Leaside High School field to think about a small donation to the cost of the show. “Victoria Day Fireworks May 20,2019 @ Leaside High School 8:45 approx. start time. Cyclist struck on St. Clair near Mt. Pleasant/Traffic camera

St. Clair Ave has been re-opened after a teen boy on a bicycle was struck near the Clifton Rd. crosswalk Monday about 8.30 a.m. TPS Operations tweeted that the injuries did not appear serious but the boy was taken to hospital for observation. The driver of a car involved remained at the scene.

American actress and singer Doris Day, whose wholesome screen presence stood for a time of innocence in 1960s films, has died, her foundation says. She was 97. The Doris Day Animal Foundation confirmed Day died early Monday at her Carmel Valley, Calif., home. She was surrounded by close friends and “had been in excellent physical health for her age, until recently contracting a serious case of pneumonia,” the foundation says in an emailed statement. Day broke into her singing career at the age of 19 with the Les Brown Band. She went on to become a popular recording artist and Hollywood actress. In this good obit from City News she is seen telling Johnny Carson that despite the image she was no Goody Two Shoes.

Onex Corp. has signed a friendly deal to buy WestJet Airlines Ltd. in a deal it valued at $5 billion, including assumed debt. Under the agreement, Onex will pay $31 per share for WestJet, which will continue to operate as a privately held company. Onex is controlled by mining billionaire Gerald Schwartz. His wife. Heather Reisman, operates the Indigo chain. The couple are celebrated philanthropists. WestJet shares closed at $18.52 on Friday. The deal comes after Onex approached the airline in March. Completion of the transaction is subject to a number of conditions, including court, regulatory and shareholder approvals.

York Memorial Collegiate students will return to class at nearby George Harvey Collegiate Institute, 1700 Keele St. Monday morning. For the rest of the school year, the school will accommodate classes for both George Harvey and York Memorial students. York Memorial was struck by fire of unknown origin last week and badly damaged. It appears that a good deal of juggling with be required to make room. The York enrolment is 880. TDSB

Residents are reminded that the measles virus is circulating in many countries and that they should check to ensure they are protected against measles before travelling. How complicated is complicated enough? Will you remember it?

The CBC is reporting that an Interac transfer of cash between friends was stolen because, apparently, the sender’s password and security question were too weak and easy to guess. The thrust of the story is that the bank, RBC, won’t reimburse the sender because of this. The case involves two friends who bank at the same branch. The story makes a stab at explaining how this can happen but it will be over the heads of most readers. As to passwords, the eternal question is how easy is too easy? Or, how complicated and forgettable is safe? Most people have endless passwords, accumulated as they are ordered to renew them. It is the curse of the age.

You may just weep briefly in joy for Brianna Watts, 18 (left) a once homeless girl who worked hard and who, in recent days, has been told that she has been accepted at all 12 of the universities for which she applied. At the centre, Krista Noelle Madden, like many new mothers, appears to have fallen victim to postpartem depression. She is now accused of throwing her child off a cliff in North Carolina.  The baby survived and is said to be doing well. At the right is Anna Sorokin, a German woman who duped New York society into believing she was a European heiress even as she shook them down.
