April Fools Day saw the Toronto Public Library venture into fictional cat lending. They called it the Purrfect Pals program. Many commercial firms are especially fond of grabbing a little free attention. Two regulars are Swiss Chalet and WestJet. This year Swiss Chalet announced its Chalet sauce will be available as ice cream. Last year the chicken restaurant said it was installing “sauce fountains” at all its tables. West Jet (as seen in the City News video) spent a dollar or two  on its joke. This year the airline got plenty of attention for its music festival in the sky. Woohoo. Hamilton police announced the formation of a feline squad and the TTC promised 24-hour subway service this summer. Not to be unkind, but if they could just run it consistently on weekends it would be a triumph. Subway Sandwich announced a hefty Poutine Sandwich. And so it went. But Microsoft wrote to its employees a few days ago warning them that the firm did not like April Fools. The first legal pot shop in Toronto is ready to open its doors Monday morning. It’s at 202 Queen East if you’re in a rush. Another such store, Ameri, may or may not open at 20 Cumberland Ave. A Toronto lawyer, Caryma Sa’d, accompanied by colleagues, erected a tent outside the Queen St. address in order to be the first to make a purchase there. SUV carried some distance from road/CBC

One person was critically injured when an SUV was struck by Via Rail Train 76 from Windsor to Toronto Sunday. The collision occurred at the Kiel Dr. crossing, which is protected by gates and lights. It’s not clear how the vehicle got onto the tracks. The train and passengers were delayed five hours. Other trains were also delayed. Train 76 arrived in Toronto close to 11 p.m. Ellwood Shreve of the Chatham Daily News posted video of the vehicle being winched onto a trailer

Monday is April 1 so don’t get fooled. But no fooling, temperatures will rise above freezing and stay there during both day and night this week. Hallelujah brothers and sisters. Chunks of ice from January and slushy snow from Saturday will be gone by this time next week.

Expected increases in fuel taxes

People in Manitoba, Ontario, Saskatchewan and New Brunswick will be paying more for gasoline and heating fuel Monday when the federal government’s carbon tax begins in provinces that refused to impose their own emissions pricing. There are many uncertainties about the impact of the federal tax but it appears that regular gasoline may increase by as much as 4.4 cents per litre.

An Edmonton woman who says she thought she had signed up for unlimited Canada-wide calling is dealing with a $5,000 bill from Bell Canada. The CBC report here says it was run up by her teen son as he talked to a girlfriend living some 150 km away. CBC
