A study done at McGill University which appears in the Psychiatry Journal of the American Medical Association Thursday says smoking cannabis as a teenager increases the risk of depression and suicide during young adulthood. Individual risk from the use of cannabis remains moderate to low but because so many teens are smoking cannabis, there is potential for large numbers of young people to be affected, according to findings. However the researchers, led by Gabriella Gobb, didn’t find a link between marijuana use and increased risk of anxiety. Upper left, it’s no one’s business if this gentleman wishes to walk along Parkhurst Blvd. dressed in shorts or whatever in this weather. But it caught the eye of more than one resident and who talked about it on Leaside Chit Chat. It was shot Tuesday morning. Brrr. Upper right, Councillor Robinson met with the board of the Bayview-Leaside BIA this week. There’s lots to learn for the new member of Don Valley West. They’re digging up the 18th Century dead in London to build a new train station and it is yielding wonderful glimpses of England’s history. But not everyone is happy. Then, Toronto will conduct a safety blitz of so-called “high-risk high rises” to try to avoid the water, power and heat failure seen in St. James Town this winter. Below that, York St is closed because glass panels are falling from a new building. What the heck is going on? Lastly, every new mother and father should watch this CBS report on a new pacifier that will play a preemie infant a song sung by his mom or dad. The babies are said to love it.

Highway 401 was slowly getting back to normal late Wednesday afternoon west of Highway 25 at Milton after a classic wintertime pileup of more than 25 vehicles. The good news is that injuries were light. Check the video below narrated by Sgt. Kerry Schmidt of the OPP to catch the flavour of this mess at its height.

Ford is recalling nearly 1.5 million pickup trucks in North America because the transmissions can suddenly downshift into first gear. The recall — 1.26 million vehicles in the U.S. and 221,000 in Canada — covers F-150 trucks from the 2011 through 2013 model years with six-speed automatic transmissions. It may take a lot of doing, we know, but here’s Indigenous model Michaella Shannon to help. Her face is currently gracing a massive Nordstom billboard downtown. Something of a first. Upper right, the CN Tower was painted gold last night to honour Grammy winners and nominees. Below that, a vivid image of the destructive fire at the Agincourt Recreation Centre last week. Fire officials have declared it accidental and plans to rebuild are underway.  Centre left, 19th Century doors are in place as little privacy walls at the Starbucks at Dupont and Christie Sts. Yes, it is a fancy old branch of the Dominion Bank. Nice touch. At right, residents of Molson St. in Summerhill west of Yonge St. were treated to this mounted unit checking out alleys in the neighborhood. Finally at bottom, you have to see these wheels at the auto show which starts Friday.

Approximately 2,800 customers in the following area may be without power: North of Burgess Ave. to south of Kingston Rd., west of Coxwell Ave. to east of Main St. More info to come when available.

Toronto Hydro also says about 8,000 customers in area bordered by Eglinton Ave., Rogers Rd., Avon Ave., and McRoberts Ave. are currently without power.

Determined advocate for tenants

Abbas Kolia, the tireless advocate of tenants in Thorncliffe Park, has died. His passing occurred late last week while he was visiting his home in India. He was buried there. Many friends and notable persons have tweeted their respects. Kolia was president of the residents’ association in Thorncliffe Park. He was known as the Sheriff of Thorncliffe. His responsible leadership included strong support for the Costco store on Overlea Blvd. as a place where immigrant families would find employment. As many as 200 people in the area of Thorncliffe Park have received jobs at Costco. They are said to pay as much as $15 an hour and include benefits.

Many Councillors are expressing bitter resentment and threatening to make it impossible for the City and the Ontario government to upload transit construction to the Province. Listen to Councillor Perks (Ward 4).
