Residents flee fire near community north of Parry Sound

As many as 50 homes have been evacuated because of an out-of-control forest fire north of Parry Sound. The fire — Parry Sound 33 — is threatening the community of Key Harbour on the Georgian Bay shore. It is one of as many as 65 burning in Ontario during this dry season. Fire officials say perhaps 34 are out of control. Many were started by lightning last week. Most of the blazes are in the far northwest but several are burning below the Lakehead including Parry Sound 33. The mandatory evacuation order was issued for the Key Harbour area and the municipality of Killarney south of the French River Provincial Park, after the fire more than quadrupled in size Friday to about 19 square kilometres, according to the Ontario’s Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry. “Everyone who was evacuated was evacuated by boat,” said ministry spokeswoman Isabelle Chenard. “Our community is devastated at the impact of (the fire) Parry Sound 33,” Jennifer Kivinen, co-president of the Key River Area Association, told Global News.

Southvale trees lost, homeowner gets lawyer’s warning letter

There is a long Facebook thread Friday night originating with a woman who lives beside the development at 3 and 5 Southvale Drive. The proximity of this home to the daily construction underway at that site cannot be pleasant. But two statements from this homeowner seem notable. She claims that three mature trees were removed because they were made unsustainable in an irregular way. She also says she has received a legal letter from the contractor telling her to govern herself accordingly. What the grievance might be on the part of the contractor and developer is not stated in specifics except that the woman says she complained to the City. Facebook
