Power was out briefly Sunday morning in Midtown, the third such early morning outage in recent months. Power was off by 6.55 a.m. and returned shortly before 7 a.m.

Sunday morning will see the kickoff 10th Anniversary of Sarah and Claire’s Food Drive. The event begins at 10 a.m. at Leaside Memorial Gardens Arena as part of the Leaside Memorial Gardens 65th anniversary celebration. The day runs from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. Drop by and have breakfast/brunch. Andy Elder of Grilltime will be creating delicious peameal on a bun sandwiches for $6 (generously donated by Grill Time & COBS Bread). As they are committed to doing, the sisters Sarah and Claire want to erase hunger around here. You purchase a cans of beans from our  the “canstruction” (1700 cans of beans have been generously donated by Tufts valu-mart). Cans are being sold for $2/can. At 10:30 dignitaries will be speaking, including: Mayor John Tory, MP Rob Oliphant and Councillor Josh Matlow

A fire worthy of the term conflagration has destroyed a home on Lady Valentina Avenue near Heintzman Crescent in Vaughan. The late afternoon fire was called in at about 5 p.m. There were no injuries.

Re-opening the trail

Joanna Lavoie of the Beach Mirror has written about stone sculptures along the Lower Don Trail in a meadow north of the Bloor Viaduct. Access to these works has become easier and safer with the re-opening today of the Lower Don Trail by Mayor Tory and Councillors Wong-Tam and McMahon, who each represent parts of the valley at this point. As reported by Ms Lavoie. the large-scale figures depict gargoyles that adorn buildings in downtown Toronto. The display carries a dramatic name: Monsters for Beauty, Permanence and Individuality. They are by acclaimed Omaskêko Cree artist Duane Linklater. There is more here as well as a video but the proprietary player seems a bit rocky.

Arnold Chan, the Liberal MP for Scarborough-Agincourt, was remembered for his compassion and dedication to politics at a church service in Toronto on Saturday at Bloor Street United Church. Chan died last week of cancer at the age of 50. Then, in Cininnati, and elsewhere in the US, municpalities are discovering alarming failures in their 9-1-1 call systems. Below that, a bureaucratic mix up has seen the failure of the City of Missisauga to approve new temporary classrooms for some children. Finally, a story on some of the new toys on their way for Christmas. The Beat Bugs are coming.

The montage of political rivals (and others) plastered all over the walls of the washroom of the Mayor of Stouffville is surely one of oddest ethics investigations recorded. In the end, Integrity Commissioner Suzanne Craig has said that Mayor Justin Altmann should apologize and accept a one-month docking of his salary. Why? The filter of modern human relations has found that creepy thing known as an uncomfortable workplace in his worship’s loo. But did it also hint at animus toward people as well. One picture had the words “you’re dead” written under it. The mayor says he was only trying to visualize things at City Hall. The commissioner accepts that but adds Mr. Altmann should have known better. There is an amazing absence of much other detail and in the age of the iPhone stunningly, zero pictures. CBC
