A heat warning for Saturday has been issued by Environment Canada. Hot and humid conditions are expected this weekend and into early next week. Mostly sunny skies this weekend will allow humidex values to approach forty both today and Sunday. These unseasonably warm temperatures and high humidex values will likely persist into early next week.

$60 MILLION WINNER

Canadian Press says a ticket purchased in the Prairies claimed Friday night’s $60 million Lotto Max jackpot. There were also 15 Maxmillion prizes of $1 million each up for grabs and three of them were won by ticket holders in Quebec, Ontario and the Prairies.

Six youths between 18 and 16 were injured, two gravely, when their van went off the road in an open parkland part of Toronto near St. Clair Ave. W  and Weston Rd. The vehicle hit a tree after going into a ditch near the intersection of Rockcliffe Blvd. and Woolner Ave/Terry Dr. A seventh teen in the van was unhurt, police said. This occurred before 1 a.m. and tweeted comments from witnesses at the scene suggest there had been speeding.

This lovely Saturday holds many things to do including the Mt. Pleasant Village BIA Harvest Fair underway at 10 a.m. To the right, Leaside Junior Wildcats got off on the right foot last night at Preston Memorial Gardens by beating the Cambridge Rivulettes 1-0. It was a dandy with the Cats winning at 3.48 of overtime on a goal by Sarah Brooks assisted by Marlo Campbell. Mid left,  a reminder that the Leaside Blood Clinic at Northlea School will be back Wednesday, October 4. It’s in you to give. Finally, he sees the little sparrow at East York Town Centre. A driver has died in flaming head-on collision between a car and a school bus in Oshawa on Simcoe St. between Coates Rd. and Raglan Rd. Friday. Police say the bus driver and all the students are relatively unscathed by the incident. No names have been released.

Audra Brown of City News reports on a little known seed perpetuating program available at 21 Toronto Public Library branches. The public may take the seeds and are honour bound to replace them from their own garden growth. It seems to be focussed on vegetables but that isn’t said so maybe horticulturists can inquire as well.

Sunnybrook veterans were able to enjoy the pleasant September weather Friday on an excursion which took them to the Eglinton Square Shopping Centre food court. This sunlit space is located off a not very busy approach to the mall from residential Englehart Crescent.

Saturday will see the re-opening off the Lower Don Trail with a ceremony attended by Mayor Tory and others at the new Pottery Road trail bridge. It begins at 9.50 a.m with remarks at ten. This is at the south side of Todmorden Mills. Media parking is available at Todmorden Mills parking lot. Also present will be Councillor Mary-Margaret McMahon (Ward 32 Beaches-East York), Chair of the City’s Parks and Environment Committee, Councillor Mary Fragedakis (Ward 29 Toronto-Danforth) and Councillor Kristyn Wong-Tam (Ward 27 Toronto Centre-Rosedale). The event will begin with a bike ride from Evergreen Brick Works to the Pottery Road Trail Bridge and will include food, games, music and activities at locations along the trail including the Cloverleaf, Riverdale Park East and Corktown Common.

The Crown has begun its opening statement in the trial of former Dalton McGuinty aides Laura Miller and David Livingston Friday morning in Toronto. They are accused of breach of trust and mischief in the erasure and deletion of records including email related to the infamous election-eve cancellation of two gas-fired power plants in 2010.
