Surprise! SCOC upholds 18-month get-out-of-jail decision

The Supreme Court of Canada has surprised some who tried to second-guess it. They thought the SCOC might adjust its recent ruling that unless a case against a criminal accused is heard in 18 months it must be thrown out. But the court voted 7-0 in an appeal reported today which sustains that limit. This expectation has many Crown Attorneys and police services reeling as they try to figure out how to move matters along when it may well be in the interest of the accused to slow them down. They are concerned that many cases are getting tossed out since the SCOC’s decision in the so-called Jordan case last year. Oddly, the divide among the justices at that time was 5-4. The appeal before the court this time was that of a Newfoundland accused drug dealer who waited five years for a five-day trial. CBC story provides some nuancing on court’s intentions and a seven-year case where the accused manipulated the system to create delays.

Car into vacant house in North York, cops suspect impaired

Residents of Moore Park are reminded again Friday morning how names like Moore Park have been spirited away to other parts of the City to add a little lustre to the neighborhood. Thus we have the collision of a car into a vacant house on Moore Park Avenue, a locale far from its Midtown inspiration centred on Mt. Pleasant  Rd. and St. Clair Ave. E. This avenue is southwest of Steeles Ave and Yonge Street St. in the Newtonbrook area of North York. Two women were trapped in the vehicle and had to extricated by the fire department. Police say there may have been some drinking going on. CBC photo/ Twitter

Cash for newspapers from Netflix tax nixed by Mr. Trudeau

The federal government in no less a presence than the prime minister himself has rejected a scheme to tax Netflix service in Canada with the money to be given to struggling newspapers. In recent times, many companies still publishing on paper have called for such a subsidy in the name of the protection of democracy. A noble cause if there is a connection. In the case of the Toronto Star, they have also called for the CBC to be forbidden advertising presumably to make the market easier for papers.

Laird Dr. traffic snarled when truck clips pole at Industrial

Traffic was snarled on Laird Drive Thursday afternoon when a delivery truck clipped a utility pole on the west side of the street outside AML Auto Service opposite Industrial St. Traffic southbound was re-routed onto Stickney Ave at Gyro Mazda and then along Randolph Rd. The blockage might take a while because wires hanging low over Laird need to be re-strung.
