Meeting April 11 at NSS on LRT station in gracious old bank
by •
Metrolinx has scheduled a public meeting for Tuesday, April 11, 2017 on the LRT stop at Eglinton Ave East and Mt. Pleasant. That’s the 1920 bank building which will be rebuilt to accommodate passenger traffic and commercial concessions as well. The elegant former Imperial Bank branch (later CIBC on the merger with Canadian Bank of Commerce) then Second Cup Coffee shop will retain the charming Palladian window over the former front door on the corner. That door will still be there but most of the hordes of train riders will come and go by wide new doors to be installed on Mt. Pleasant. At last word there will be shops including maybe the return of Second Cup. Not sure about that. The building was taken down stone by stone in 2016 and will rise again on a date not too far off. Fairy-tale pursuit to parenthood had a 21st Century twist
by •
The current (April 2017) issue of Carol Eby’s magazine Neighbours of Leaside and Bennington Heights profiles Jay and Mallory Carmichael. He is the Director of Business Development and Operations at Holland Bloorview Kids Hospital on Kilgour Road. Mallory is employed in pharmaceutical sales. Their journey to happy parenthood has a fairy tale twist for the 21st Century. They needed and got assistance from the Anova Fertility and Reproductive Clinic on Sheppard Ave. West. The couple spent some two years of trial and error with prescription, injection and finally vitro fertilization pursuing a pregnancy. Their wonderful child Cooper Carmichael is evidence of their success and good fortune. If you don’t get Neighbours of Leaside and Bennington Heights, try to borrow it for the read. Don Rickles has died at the age of 90. This profile from CNN reveals a little known fact that he was discovered by Frank Sinatra. In Florida, Donald Trump and Xi Jinping will meet over the weekend. Both men arrived there today and the agenda begins with North Korea. Below that, a young Canadian is in prison in Algeria and some may say there’s good reason. He is one of the so-called Calgary Cluster of young guys radicalized at a mosque in the Alberta cow town. Finally, Russia is mourning the dead in the St Petersburg subway bombing.

Oil blaze in Steeles wrecking yard day’s work for firefighters
by •
A nasty oil-fed fire at an isolated auto-wrecker’s yard on Steeles Ave. between Staines and Sewell’s Rds. has kept Toronto fire personnel busy Thursday. At one point there were five alarms rung in to deal with the burning waste fuel. Pumpers from Pickering, Markham and Richmond Hill also joined the battle. It was noticed about 11 a.m. The flames spread to a low-level office on the property. CN Rail was notified to stop service along a track nearby because of smoke in the area. The auto-wrecker’s yard is far away from fire hydrants so a relay pump had to be used to pump water from one hydrant to the other to reach the fire.

Longer no parking, no turn times creeping into east end
by •
That enemy of the people Mr. Congestion may be blamed for the lengthening of no parking and no turn times on the east side. As decreed at City Hall, it cannot be tolerated. Thus we will see an extension of the program stretching prohibitions (see release) to 3.30 to 6 and in some places 3.30 to 6.30. On Bayview Ave and Mt. Pleasant Rd. the 4 to 6 standard remains but merchants and residents should be on guard. This is especially true of those who value the local shopping. For many shops, business drops dead at 4 p.m. Those who are congested in South Bayview are those passing through. City Toronto
