Statues of Harry and Meg pop up, sponsor so far unknown

An Instagram account named Royals take the 6 is publishing photos of what appear to be wax figures of the famous couple in Canadian inspired outfits visiting downtown Toronto tourist attractions.

The first post says, “We made it to #Canada! Our first stop was the iconic @CNTower. These #views have us feeling like a couple of true #canucks. Although, it is a bit colder on this side of the pond. Stay tuned to see where we head next! #royalstakethe6 ??”

Culinary Arts will close in April, other news on Bayview Ave

After 49 years, Laurie Oehy, owner of The Academy of Culinary Arts has announced that the store will be closing sometime in April.  In a notice to customers Laurie writes, “The building owner has decided to make major repairs to the property this Spring. Although unexpected, this is a bittersweet announcement for me. It will be very strange to not be here but I am extremely excited to start the next chapter – a “rewiring” if you will.”  Across the street, a new sign has been installed, at the Bomou Artisanal Bakery.  The space that used to house Rowe Farms at 1617 Bayview has a new banner in the window indicating that Toronto General Contracting will be doing some work to renovate for a new tenant.  Recently opened Darna, was featured in BlogTO‘s “The top 10 new restaurant openings in Toronto for December“.  Congrats!  The shop at 1585 Bayview, next to Badali’s Fruit Market is still vacant.  Brown paper covers the windows and we don’t have any news about what could be going on in there.  Let us know if you have any clues!  F5 Computer & Smartphone Repair Shop at 1559 Bayview Ave is for lease. The good news here is that F5 owner, Fahad is still available by appointment for computer and mobile phone repairs.  The “For Lease” sign has been removed from the former Creeds Coffee shop location at 1595 Bayview.  And finally, the construction is progressing at the north-east and north-west corners of Bayview & Millwood.  The Bayview Leaside BIA beautification project has been progressing slowly this winter, but there are signs that they are nearing completion as it appears as though the construction fencing is being removed from the west side today!  See you on Bayview!

27 Storey Condo Tower Proposed for 733 Mount Pleasant

Looking north to 733 Mount Pleasant Rd, image via submission to the City of Toronto (UrbanToronto)

UrbanToronto has reported that Rockport Group has submitted a Zoning Bylaw Amendment application for 733 Mount Pleasant Road, replacing their initial submission from 2018. Originally proposed as a 9-storey mid-rise, the developer is now proposing a 27-storey tower, with five times the number of residential units of the original application.

“The change corresponds to the changes to OPA 405, commonly known as Midtown in Focus, that were unilaterally made by the provincial government in 2019. The changes to OPA 405 came in July, 2019, when the Ford government made over 70 alterations to the Midtown official plan. Focusing on intensifying nodes surrounding transit stations, the changes allow for increased density across the board. With the subject site located roughly 160 metres south of a future Crosstown LRT Station at Eglinton and Mount Pleasant, the project is well within the radius for added density.”

The Quack is Back! Giant Mama Duck returning to Toronto

The Redpath Waterfront Festival, presented by Billy Bishop Airport, today announced the return of the World’s Largest Rubber Duck to Toronto’s Waterfront. The festival is bringing back Mama Duck, who is six stories tall and weighs 30,000 pounds, to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the festival, which this year is taking place June 19-21, 2020.

In 2017, the World’s Largest Rubber Duck made a splash in Toronto when it floated in to celebrate Canada’s 150th anniversary at the waterfront festival. Drawn to the Duck, more than 750,000 people attended the three-day celebration and the festival generated an estimated $7.6 million in economic impact for the city of Toronto. Ontario’s red and white health cards expiring July 1, 2020

As of July 1, 2020, red and white health cards will no longer be accepted for Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) services. Approximately 300,000 red and white health cards remain in circulation. This represents two per cent of all Ontario health cards.

“The advanced security features of the photo health card help protect our public health system and is another measure to improve value for taxpayers’ dollars,” said Christine Elliott, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health. “While there is no cost to convert or renew an Ontario photo health card, there could be significant costs by allowing red and white health cards, which could be used fraudulently, to remain in circulation. Each month, individuals using these outdated cards access up to $108 million in health services.” Starting this month, individuals with red and white health cards will begin to receive letters letting them know that they will need to get a photo health card at a ServiceOntario centre before the July 1, 2020, deadline.

Photo health cards can easily be obtained for free at ServiceOntario by:

Regardless of an individual’s health card status, Ontario’s public hospitals cannot refuse to provide services to a patient who is faced with a life-threatening medical emergency.

Red and white card holders who do not convert by July 1, 2020, may be asked to pay up-front for insured health services as their red and white health card will not be valid. Once a photo health card is obtained, eligibility for Ontario health insurance is restored and any payments made for OHIP-insured

In addition to sending multiple notification letters, the province will also advertise the final transition at all ServiceOntario locations and promote these changes on the ministry’s social media channels. — Ontario Ministry of Health News Release
