Councillor Josh Matlow in self-isolation due to COVID-19

A statement published Monday by Josh Matlow, Ward 12, reads: I have just been informed that I came into contact this past Thursday, March 5th, with an individual who has tested positive for COVID – 19 (Novel Coronavirus) upon their return from a conference in Washington, DC. While I am completely asymptomatic, out of an abundance of caution, and on the advice of Dr. Eileen de Villa, the City’s Medical Officer of Health, I am going into self-isolation until March 20th.

It is very important to note that I have been informed by Dr. de Villa that because I am asymptomatic, no one, including my family, is at an elevated risk of having contracted the virus due to contact with me. The Medical Officer of Health, and her excellent team, have provided me with prompt, informative advice, as they have to all Toronto residents since the virus was discovered. It is important that everyone seek information regarding COVID – 19 from credible sources, such as Toronto Public Health, and follow expert advice.

During my isolation period, I will unfortunately have to cancel all public events, including a community meeting to support Mabel’s Fables tomorrow evening, March 10th. The meeting will be rescheduled and the new date, time, and location will be communicated to residents as soon as possible.

For more information about COVID – 19 and how to protect yourself and your family, please visit the City of Toronto’s webpage. If you have travelled from Hubei Province, China, or Iran within the last 14 days or have had close contact with a person ill with COVID-19, please self-isolate and contact Toronto Public Health at 416-338-7600 within 24 hours of arriving in Toronto.

Councillor Josh Matlow”

Culinary Arts will close in April, other news on Bayview Ave

After 49 years, Laurie Oehy, owner of The Academy of Culinary Arts has announced that the store will be closing sometime in April.  In a notice to customers Laurie writes, “The building owner has decided to make major repairs to the property this Spring. Although unexpected, this is a bittersweet announcement for me. It will be very strange to not be here but I am extremely excited to start the next chapter – a “rewiring” if you will.”  Across the street, a new sign has been installed, at the Bomou Artisanal Bakery.  The space that used to house Rowe Farms at 1617 Bayview has a new banner in the window indicating that Toronto General Contracting will be doing some work to renovate for a new tenant.  Recently opened Darna, was featured in BlogTO‘s “The top 10 new restaurant openings in Toronto for December“.  Congrats!  The shop at 1585 Bayview, next to Badali’s Fruit Market is still vacant.  Brown paper covers the windows and we don’t have any news about what could be going on in there.  Let us know if you have any clues!  F5 Computer & Smartphone Repair Shop at 1559 Bayview Ave is for lease. The good news here is that F5 owner, Fahad is still available by appointment for computer and mobile phone repairs.  The “For Lease” sign has been removed from the former Creeds Coffee shop location at 1595 Bayview.  And finally, the construction is progressing at the north-east and north-west corners of Bayview & Millwood.  The Bayview Leaside BIA beautification project has been progressing slowly this winter, but there are signs that they are nearing completion as it appears as though the construction fencing is being removed from the west side today!  See you on Bayview!

27 Storey Condo Tower Proposed for 733 Mount Pleasant

Looking north to 733 Mount Pleasant Rd, image via submission to the City of Toronto (UrbanToronto)

UrbanToronto has reported that Rockport Group has submitted a Zoning Bylaw Amendment application for 733 Mount Pleasant Road, replacing their initial submission from 2018. Originally proposed as a 9-storey mid-rise, the developer is now proposing a 27-storey tower, with five times the number of residential units of the original application.

“The change corresponds to the changes to OPA 405, commonly known as Midtown in Focus, that were unilaterally made by the provincial government in 2019. The changes to OPA 405 came in July, 2019, when the Ford government made over 70 alterations to the Midtown official plan. Focusing on intensifying nodes surrounding transit stations, the changes allow for increased density across the board. With the subject site located roughly 160 metres south of a future Crosstown LRT Station at Eglinton and Mount Pleasant, the project is well within the radius for added density.”

The Quack is Back! Giant Mama Duck returning to Toronto

The Redpath Waterfront Festival, presented by Billy Bishop Airport, today announced the return of the World’s Largest Rubber Duck to Toronto’s Waterfront. The festival is bringing back Mama Duck, who is six stories tall and weighs 30,000 pounds, to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the festival, which this year is taking place June 19-21, 2020.
