Road closures for Caribbean & Veld Festivals this weekend

Toronto Caribbean Carnival – Grand Parade
Lake Shore Boulevard West will be fully closed from Bathurst St to Colborne Lodge Dr starting at 2 a.m. on Saturday, August 3 until 6 a.m. on Sunday, August 4.

Veld Music Festival
All road closures and restrictions for this event are on streets within Downsview Park on Saturday, August 3 and Sunday, August 4. Residents travelling around Downsview Park on major roads including Sheppard Avenue West, Allen Rd, Dufferin St, Keele St., and Wilson Avenue are reminded to expect delays and plan their travel in advance.

Warnings issued for heat and severe thunderstorms Friday

At 1:05 p.m. EDT, Environment Canada meteorologists are tracking a severe thunderstorm capable of producing very strong wind gusts, up to nickel size hail and heavy rain.

This line of severe thunderstorms is located from 7 kilometres west of Georgina Island to Rexdale, moving east at 70 km/h.

Locations impacted include:
Vaughan, Richmond Hill, Markham, Uxbridge, North York, Sutton, Sibbald Point Provincial Park, Scarborough and Whitchurch-Stouffville.

Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. Strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles.

Significant heat and humidity arrives today.

Daytime temperatures in the low to mid thirties with humidex values of 40 or higher are expected today and again on Saturday. Little relief is expected tonight and Saturday night as temperatures will only fall to the low to mid twenties with humidex values remaining near 30.

A cooler and less humid air mass is forecast to arrive in the wake of a weak cold front Sunday.

Leaside woman assists veteran with first pitch at Jays game

There was a proud moment for Leaside’s Sarah Byford this Canada Day long weekend. She was given the opportunity to assist World War II Veteran, Bill Martin as he threw out the ceremonial first pitch at the Blue Jays game on June 30th, 2019. Watch the video below! More than two dozen residents of Sunnybrook’s Veterans Centre attended the game and were provided all the perks of sitting in the Jays Care Community Clubhouse Box seats. Parade Route: The East York Toronto Canada Day Parade begins at 10 am on Cosburn Ave, outside Dieppe Park, and heads east to Coxwell Avenue, turning south at East York Collegiate, passing East York Civic Centre and Michael Garron Hospital. It turns east onto Sammon Avenue to Woodbine, where it heads north through just south of O’Connnor. A block away from the Festival kicking off at Stan Wadlow Park.

Festival: Our festival grounds are at Stan Wadlow Park – 373 Cedarvale Ave. The festival includes music, children’s activities, artisans, merchants and community group market and when the sun goes down, a spectacular firework display at 10pm. By popular demand the midway and the Muddy York Brewing Craft Beer Garden. The Kiwanis Pool will aslo be open so bring your suit.

A pooch named Scamp the Tramp has won this year’s World’s Ugliest Dog contest, held Friday at the Sonoma-Marin Fair in Petaluma, California, beating out a field of 18 other four-legged contestants.

“He’s Scamp the Champ, no longer Scamp the Tramp,” owner Yvonne Morones of Santa Rosa, California told the Santa Rosa Press-Democrat after the victory. “I think the audience saw his beautiful spirit and everything he’s given back to the community.” Today Show
