King Street bars shut for pressuring staff to work while sick

Three King St West restaurants and bars have been closed by Toronto’s Medical Officer of Health after it was found that staff, some of whom had C-19, were pressured to work while ill. MOH Dr Eileen de Villa issued orders to shut until further notice the bars known as MARBL, 455 King, King Taps, 100 King and Casa Mezcal, 291 King. A release Saturday said the health department had found “a concerning link” indicating that staff working for more than one of the businesses had C-19. It said staff had also been found to be working while ill or been pressured to work while ill.

Yonge Warehouse Warningg

Toronto Public Health also issued an alert to staff and patrons of the Yonge Street Warehouse at 336 Yonge St. about potential exposure to COVID-19. The period for potential exposure is September 10 to September 17. In the last few days, tests have confirmed that seven people linked to this establishment are positive for COVID-19. Five are employees and two are patrons. TPH has followed up with all known close contacts. The close contacts have been asked to self-isolate for 14 days and to go for testing.

Canada does deal with AstraZeneca

As seen below in a tweet from Toronto epidemiologist Isaac Bogoch, Canada has done a vaccine deal with AstraZeneca. He notes that there are now deals between Canada and vaccine makers Sanofi, GlaxoSmithKline, Johnson & Johnson, Novavax, Pfizer and Moderna.

475 new cases in Ontario Saturday

The Ministry of Health reports another 435 new cases of C-19 in the province Saturday. The infection continues a resurgence in Toronto where there were 131 cases counted. Be careful everyone.

Craig’s Cookies range from Oreo and Rice Krispies to Bacon

The ingenious baker Craig’s Cookies will open its third shop in Toronto soon at 1581 Bayview Ave. They’ve taken down the rather cumbersome wooden patio in front of the shop to provide direct access for excited fans of the firm’s interesting products. To a considerable extent, it seems that Craig’s Cookies are stuffed with other people’s goods, like Rice Krispies, Reeses Pieces, Nutella, Mars Bars and Oreo. But there are other more generic cookie types such as Apple Pie and Maple Bacon. They’re in the oven.

COVID-19 count Friday is 409 with Toronto spiking to 204

The Ministry of Health reports 409 new C-19 cases on Friday, the same as Thursday’s count. Toronto alone at 204 cases accounts for half of Ontario cases. Elsewhere, there were 66 cases in Peel and 40 in Ottawa.

Cyclist, 37, fatally injured in fall in front of car on Dundas

A man of 37 has died when he lost control of his bicycle on Dundas St. W. and fell in front a car heading the same direction, police say. They were called to the corner of Dundas and Denison Avenue area around 6 p.m. Thursday. Many cycling falls are caused by streetcar tracks. The investigation continues.

Two window washers safe after platform crashes to Yonge

Two window washers have been rescued from a ledge near the top of the Canada Square building at 2180 Yonge St. Thursday after their platform fell to the ground and left one of the men dangling. He was hauled to safety on the ledge by his co-worker as seen in the dramatic picture taken by Mark Norman. The Toronto Fire Service tweeted at about 1.15 p.m. that the two men had been brought safely inside the building after a window was smashed to permit entry.



New cases number 409 Thursday as second-wave rolls on

Ontario is reporting 409 new cases of COVID-19 on Thursday, an increase from the 335 cases that were confirmed on Wednesday. Toronto had 151, Peel 46 and Ottawa 82. One more person has died, raising the provincial death toll to 2,836. In a tweet, Health Minister Christine Elliott said 63 percent of Thursday’s cases are people under the age of 40. A total of 48,496 people have now tested positive for the coronavirus in the province, with 86.4 percent having  The provincial population last year was 14.57 million.

SCOC refuses to hear Jim Karygiannis case against expulson

The Supreme Court of Canada has refused to hear the appeal of Councillor Jim Karygiannis (Ward 22) on his removal from office for violations of the Municipal Elections Act. As a result, Mr Karygiannis must forfeit his seat on the council. A report will go to City Council on September 30 with the option for Council to either appoint or direct a by-election to fill the seat. Karygiannis hoofed from office (again) for $26,000 dinner

Man delivers syringes to Eglinton School, flees on a bicycle

Police say a man on a bicycle delivered a package containing syringes and other paraphernalia to Eglinton Junior Public School at Eglinton Ave. and Mt. Pleasant Rd. Tuesday morning. He was spotted by Community Safety Team members. Just what this act was all about is an open question but the issue of drug use and discarded syringes is a burning issue in the Roehampton neighbourhood since homeless and street people moved into the former Roehampton Hotel at 808 Mt. Pleasant. Police call this incident mischief. The man is described as 5’9”, 35-45 years of age, with a medium build. He was wearing a white and blue Blue Jays baseball cap, a white and grey striped long-sleeved sweater under a black down vest, grey pants, and black running shoes. He was last seen riding a dark-coloured bicycle.
