“Girls are not real” complaint against Ottawa school board

A complaint to the Ontario Human Rights Tribunal the Ottawa school board will proceed to a formal hearing. It comes from the parents of a six-year-old girl who was told by her teacher during class that “girls are not real.” That was in 2018. Her parents maintain the child was deeply upset by the assertion.

Shock as Metrolinx says cost outweighs benefits

A story in the Globe and Mail says the cost of major transit projects will far exceed their benefits. The report attributes the conclusion to Metrolinx documents. In particular, an analysis released Friday of the Scarborough subway extension concluded it would bring $2.8-billion in benefits over a 60-year period, and cost about $5.5-billion to build. No winning 649 ticket

No winning ticket was sold for the $7 million jackpot in Saturday night’s Lotto 649 draw. However, the guaranteed $1 million prize went to a ticket holder in Ontario. The jackpot for the next Lotto 649 draw on Mar. 4 will be approximately $9 million.

Three new presumed cases of virus found in York, Durham

Ontario has confirmed three new positive cases of coronavirus, bringing the total number of confirmed cases in the province to 11. The new cases involve a woman, 34, in York Region, and another woman, 51, and her husband, 69, in Durham region. Both women had just returned from Iran. York Region public health officials have begun a search for anyone who might have come in contact with one of the cases, either in the air or on a GO bus to Richmond Hill. As of Saturday, there were 20 confirmed coronavirus cases in Canada. The number includes eight in B.C. and one in Quebec. There have been no deaths. CBC

IGA employee, 22, handed $70 million Loto-Quebec jackpot

Gregory Mathieu, 22, used to be an employee of an IGA store in Quebec city. Now he and his family are pondering how to spend and invest the $70 million Loto-Quebec jackpot won by Mr. Mathieu last Tuesday. CTV says the young’s car had been breaking down all the time. That problem is solved. Mathieu appeared Friday with family members and co-winners Ursule Jolicoeur, Sandra Julien, Sonia Julien, Sylvie Julien, Denis Lessard, Derek Prevost and Stephane Provost.

Huge ads at teen mecca try to spread doubt vaping harmful

A huge advertising campaign in downtown Toronto and elsewhere has been launched by the British American Tobacco PLC. to persuade the public that there is “misinformation” being dispensed about vaping. The ads don’t say that vaping is safe, just that there is misinformation. The expensive campaign has been launched at Dundas Square, a well-known mecca for teens and tweens. They are a major component of vaping sales. The ads are attributed to Imperial Tobacco Canada of Montreal, a wholly-owned subsidiary of British American.

Garbage strike off as City and outside workers reach deal

The City of Toronto and the union representing outside workers reached a tentative agreement Friday evening putting an end to the threat of a strike among garbage collectors and other service employees. The tentative agreement must be voted on by members of CUPE local 416 but the outcome seems clear. Details, including the status of an issue known as employees-for-life, are still to be revealed.

Virus alert to language school students, man in 80s isolated

Toronto Public Health has sent letters to those enrolled at a Midtown English-language school for newcomers warning them that they may have been exposed to someone who has COVID–19. The school is at 90 Eglinton Ave. E. and is operated by the Toronto Catholic District School Board. The letter says that anyone from the centre who develops symptoms before March 11 should follow self-isolation guidelines. It also says that anyone who does seek medical treatment should call their healthcare provider first, so they can take necessary precautions.

Man in 80s from Egypt diagnosed

Meanwhile, a man in his 80s has been diagnosed with the virus. He is said to be resting comfortably at home in Scarborough. He is said to be the eighth such case in Ontario.

TSX makes modest recovery bid amongst panicky virus fear

Canada’s largest stock index flirted with correction territory after plunging for a sixth-straight day Friday. Fear of the coronavirus and what it might do to business drove the worst panic seen since the global financial crisis of 2008. The S&P/TSX composite index was down as much as 821 points and closed down 454.39 points at 16,263.05. In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was down 357.28 points at 25,409.36. The S&P 500 index was down 24.55 points at 2,954.21, while the Nasdaq composite was up 0.89 of a point at 8,567.37.

Man back from Iran confirmed as Ontario’s 7th virus case

A man recently returned to Toronto from Iran has been treated at Sunnybrook HSC and confirmed as the province’s seventh COVID-19 patient. The man presented at the hospital Wednesday, a day after arriving in Toronto. “The established infection prevention and control protocols were initiated; the patient was cared for at the hospital using all appropriate precautions, including being isolated as he was being tested for COVID-19,” health officials said in a news release Friday.

Three on foot recovering after car jumps curb in Willowdale

Three pedestrians were knocked down on the sidewalk at Yonge St. and Park Home Ave. in Willowdale Friday morning. A car, seen in the City News capture above, jumped the curb after a collision in the intersection. All three are said to be recovering from their injuries.

Arsonist destroys private jet in gasoline fire at Buttonville

The still-unknown story behind the arson attack that destroyed a private jet at Buttonville Airport must be a good one. Is it simple vandalism taken to an extreme or something even more nefarious involving malice, money or both. Carl Hantske of 680 News prowled the airport for the above video.
