B of C rate cut in face of “material negative shock” of virus

The Bank of Canada is cutting its key interest rate target by half a percentage point, dropping it to 1.25 per cent in response to the economic shock from the novel coronavirus outbreak. The central bank said Wednesday that it cut its target for the overnight rate because COVID-19, as the virus is named, was “a material negative shock” to this country’s economic outlook.

Lecce retreats on class size, e-learning in bid for settlement

Education Minister Lecce has asked the OSSTF and Catholic board teachers to call off strike action that they have planned for Thursday following his decision to back down on the expansion of classes and the introduction of e-learning. Given the concession, Mr Lecce said he would find it “totally unacceptable” for the unions to proceed with strike action they have planned for tomorrow.

Ontario cases now set at 20

Also Tuesday, the Ministry of Health said there are two more confirmed cases of the virus, bringing Ontario’s total including recoveries to 20. A further 45 people are under investigation. The cases are in the GTA and were diagnosed in two people who recently returned from Iran and Egypt. Both are in self-isolation.

The news will be welcome to residents throughout the area. O’Connor stretches some 2.2 kilometres from St. Clair to Victoria Park Ave. Nickle calls it an eclectic mix of businesses. And while there are many proud enterprises along the street, at places the sense of the street is spotty. Along O’Connor, “you have a block of retail, a block of apartment buildings … retail and apartment buildings,” Mr. Van Dette is quoted as saying. “It’s very disruptive, just the way the streetscape is.” Toronto.com

New virus cases traced to Iran, Egypt travellers says MOH

Ontario reported three new cases of the novel coronavirus Monday, bringing the total in the province to 15. The province’s chief medical officer of health, Dr. David Williams, is expected to provide details about the new cases at a news conference this afternoon. A spate of new cases was reported over the weekend, all of them people who had recently travelled to Iran or Egypt, or family members of those who had visited the countries. Williams has said that so far it doesn’t appear the virus known as COVID-19 is spreading locally.
