Meg on phone as Queen, Harry and William plot strategy

Meghan Markle is in Canada, almost certainly Toronto, as Her Majesty has called in her grandsons to plot strategy. Harry and Megan shocked the Queen by announcing out of nowhere on Wednesday that they will, in effect, go their own way. It isn’t clear just what they mean by that but a breakaway can be seen as weakening the monarchy. Meghan will apparently participate in the meeting by phone. It is set for Monday.

Oh boy! Some 40 to 60 mm of rain expected by midnight

Issued at 3.41 p.m. ET: Rainfall, combined with melting snow, is expected. The frozen ground has a reduced ability to absorb this rainfall. Rain will continue into this evening with total rainfall amounts of 40 to 60 mm expected by midnight. Since the ground is frozen, the winter rainfall warning criterion of 25 mm in 24 hours is being met. For information concerning flooding, please consult your local conservation authority or Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry district office. The rain will change over to freezing rain in most beginning later this evening as temperatures dip to near the zero degree mark.

Freezing rain warnings are in effect for areas just north and east of Toronto, and may be extended into areas from Toronto and west tonight as needed. Brisk west winds gusting to 60 km/h will herald the end of the precipitation Sunday morning.

All these annoying people who don’t want to be run by the Beijing Communists. Tiny little Taiwan has done it again by re-electing Tsai Ing-wen as its president for the next four years. Now, says Bloomberg News, China needs to learn to live with it. It can double down on hostility, or try some pragmatic steps that set up the long-term prospect of living together amicably, rather than pushing formulas for unification that Taiwanese won’t accept. No winning ticket was sold for the $33 million jackpot in Friday night’s Lotto Max draw. The jackpot for the next draw on Jan. 14 will grow to approximately $40 million.

Experts focus on bomb or missile as cause of crash of Flt 752

Investigators around the world at talking about either a missile attack or a bomb inside the airfcraft as they ponder the cause of the disastrous crash of a Ukrainian airlines 737 Wedneday.  Larry Vance, a retired expert from the Canadian Air Transport Authority, is seen in this CBC report. Meanwile in the Ukraine, officials said that multiple potential causes for the crash  included a bomb, a missile strike or catastrophic engine failure.

$70 million Lotto Max ticket sold in Brampton says OLG

Lottery ticket scanners across the country will be getting a workout Wednesday, after last night’s buzz-worthy Lotto Max draw. The OLG says one winning ticket worth $70 million was sold in Brampton. Tickets for 19 Maxmillion prizes were also given away. Six of those Maxmillion tickets worth $1 million each were also sold in Ontario — one each in Brampton, Hamilton, the Niagara Region, Oshawa, Ottawa and Pickering. 63 Canadians among dead in jet crash near Tehran airport

A Ukrainian Boeing-737 carrying 176 people has crashed killing all aboard. The Tehran to Kyiv flight carried 63 Canadians. Ukraine’s Tehran embassy initially blamed engine failure but later removed the statement.

South Bayview artist raises fire aid for Australian Red Cross

An area woman has posted to Facebook offering these Kangaroo and Koala Bear keychains she created to help victims of the Australian wildfires. She is making 80 limited edition pieces and selling them for $10 each. The money will go to the Australian Red Cross.
