Sweden’s prosecution authority said Thursday it had charged three men with planning a terror attack in Sweden, warning the plot could have caused serious damage had it not been prevented. The three are accused of “obtaining and storing large amounts of chemicals and other equipment with the aim of killing and wounding other people,” the prosecution authority said in a statement. The men were also charged, along with three other people, with financing terrorism. Prosecutors accuse them of sending money abroad to fund ISIS’s operations. The trial is expected to open on January 7. The men, aged between 30 and 46, come from Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan, two of the five Central Asian countries known as “the stans” tucked between India, Russia and China. The status of the accused in Sweden was not stated.

Saving Christians, aggravated cruelty and Dow Jones joy

British Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt (left) has announced a new effort by the UK government to reverse the persecution of Christians in Egypt and elsewhere in the middle east. The Bishop of Truro will conduct a review, Hunt said. In Chicago, Jerald Jeske (centre) is charged with felony aggravated cruelty for throwing two small dogs off a second floor balcony in a dispute with his wife. At right, the face of this trader says it all as the Dow Jones has its largest single increase in history Wednesday. It was up 1,000 points.

Vision Zero safety hopes fall short especially in Scarborough
by •
Mayor Tory has told the CBC that the European concept adopted by Toronto called Vision Zero to end all traffic deaths is simply “not working.” There have been more than 60 fatal collisions in 2018 including more than 40 pedestrians and cyclists. He was interviewed by Lauren Pelley of the CBC. The many deaths on roads in Scarborough especially perplex the mayor. “It’s been incredibly frustrating . . . I’d say it’s not working in the sense that you can’t quibble with the numbers,” he explained. The Vision Zero plan involves everything from physically re-making intersections to zebra-striped crosswalks to bicycle lanes. For many VZ was never about eliminating traffic deaths, but rather an attempt to greatly lower them.
Artifacts, memories of love in bloom at Bayview Ave. Jupiter
by •
Posts at Leaside Community this Boxing Day carry a photo of an old box of Christmas ornaments purchased at the Jupiter variety store on Bayview Ave. in a long-distant past. One comment comes from a woman who recalls that she met her husband at the Jupiter when they both worked there. This store is said to have been located in the large space where Dollarama now lives. Many will recall that Shoppers Drug Mart lived there until it moved up to the former Bayview playhouse space in 2011. But the history gets murky when it comes to Jupiter, a 1960s era five-and-dime store which was associated with S.S. Kresge. Both are defunct now.
Merry Christmas to this community of decency, generosity

It’s Christmas and time for our thoughts to again turn toward family and home. Here’s hoping that your Christmas is as warm and rewarding as your highest hope. At The South Bayview Bulldog we too will be with family and friends. But we will also reflect on the exceptional support The Bulldog has received from so many people. It is a labour of love to write the news of this community. To witness the decency of people and the culture of generosity here is an honour. The Bulldog is unabashedly proud to do its part in carrying the flag of the businesses and people in the place we like to call South Bayview. Thank you and Merry Christmas. Posting will resume Wednesday evening.
Flight attendant “angel” showed family how to be Canadian
by •
As Christmas approached 34 years ago, a Hong Kong mother and her young son found themselves lost at Pearson Airport. They had gotten off the plane in Toronto by mistake. The woman’s husband was waiting for them in Montreal. But good luck appeared in the form of a kind Air Canada flight attendant. She took them home with her for the night and helped them get re-booked. Now they’d like to find that woman of friendship and decency to thank her again for a very special welcome to Canada.
