Watch for a possible agreement between the UK and the EU Sunday over Brexit. The breakthrough (if it is) was a deal Saturday between the London and Madrid over Gibralter, where as we know, everyone wants to remain part of the UK. Then there is talk of a US-Mexico deal wto keep tbe migrant caravan in Mexico. Maybe.

Voice from grave narrates video of Georgian Bay shipwreck
by •
Newly-released video of the discovery of a Georgian Bay steamship has been given a soundtrack recorded by the last survivor of the 1928 sinking. The voice of Dr. Art Middlebro of Owen Sound is heard in a 1982 interview. The late Dr. Middlebro was one of only five crew who survived the sinking, which occurred just off Griffith Island on the shore of the Bruce Peninsula. The wreck of the Manasoo was found in June some 90 years after it foundered in terrible weather. The shipwreck hunters were researcher Cris Kohl and a crew of US hunters, experienced Great Lakes underwater sleuths. They found the Manasoo 60 metres underwater just off of the island. The spectacular footage of the wreck of the Manasoo was shot by Ken Merryman. The wreck contains a 1927 Chevrolet coupe and other fascinating artifacts of the time. The discoverers say that the frigid waters of Georgian Bay dramatically decreased decomposition and helped to preserve the Manasoo and its contents in “excellent condition” after it sank on September 15, 1928. Pioneer hockey women offer touching memories of 1974
by •
Anthony Reagan has published a film with interviews from the Leaside Sports Hall of Fame induction night of women hockey players from 1974. It is both touching and funny. “We didn’t know what we were doing” “What’s off side?” “We did it to see if we could do it.” Much credit belongs to these 70s girls who thereby advanced the skills, knowledge and social lives of Canadian women everywhere. Thanks ladies.

Local yule events and your taxes to fund Star, Globe, Sun?

City News has a nice summary of Christmas holiday things happening this weekend. Take a look and find one you like. Then, the doubtful practice of funding enormous media corporations because the Internet has (ahem) disrupted them. Below that, the postal union CUPW, just can’t bear the idea of its members going back to work with all the outrageous (but vague) injustices grinding down women, men and horses. Finally, it may be Black Friday to many but to others it is a curious spasm of hysteria.

Mama, papa and teen (burgers that is) cooking on Overlea
by •
The new A&W is open in the East York Town Centre. We call this arrival, like that of the new Starbucks just up the street on Overlea Blvd., part of the Costco effect. The new shopping club cannot be bad for business. At lower left, parents and kids will want to meet Tory Woolcott, the Toronto kids science writer, as she launches her new book The Brain at Mabel’s Fables on Saturday at 2 p.m. Mabel’s is at Mt. Pleasant Rd. and Hillsdale Ave. Sounds like fun. Also at the bottom, reminders about the St. Cuthbert’s canned food pickup Saturday and the Leaside Guys Night Out Toy Drive coming up early in December. Please help out. All local events are at the South Bayview Bulldog Bulletin Board.
Principal, president of St. Michael’s College School resign
by •
Pressure flowing from the exposure of violent so-called hazing incidents among students has brought about the resignation of both principal Greg reeves and president and president Father Jefferson Thompson. The school cited their “shared desire to move the school forward without distractions and allow it to focus on healing.” At statement from the school said: “Reeves and Thompson have always put the welfare, education and formation of our students first – and they do so once again today,” the news release said. “Having fulfilled their moral and ethical obligations to manage the immediate crisis and engage our school community, this courageous decision allows us to move forward with our goals: understanding how these events could have occurred, regaining the trust of our community and bringing cultural change to our school.” The distressing violence of a recent incident, and reports of others dating back decades, plus a concern that the worst instance of abuse was not reported to police promptly, have factored into discontent among parents.
Jewellers use swords to thwart hammer-wielding thieves
by •
The owners of Ashok Jewellers in Mississauga fought off hammer-wielding thieves who were smashing their way into the shop on Airport Rd. this week. Two videos tell the story as Peel Police ask for the public’s help in identifying these four violent bandits. Then, US Thanksgiving has seen the timeless Manhattan Parade that thrills millions all over the world. Finally, have a bit of sympathy for Larry the Cat as he tries to get back into the UK Prime Minister’s residence on Downing St.
